1st Annual Elknut Outdoor Productions "Elk Calling Contest"

Just a heads up that the first annual Elknut Outdoor Productions "Elk Calling Contest" is in the final planning stages. I'm sure Elknut will share dates, rules, etc., as we get a bit closer. It will occur in late May 2014 on "the" elk forum and should be a lot of fun. So friends, it's time to dust off your calls and start practicing! Should be some great prizes offered if I know Elknut1 and his sponsors.

Brent, they've dropped down as not too many folks were posting up their sounds. That said, "anytime" you want to start a thread on any types of elk sounds, please do so. Or, you can find one of the original post em up threads that have slipped down and ressurect it (bump) with some new practice sessions if you wish to.

That sounds great. I am getting some help from a "Pro" after work today. Hopefully with some mentoring I will be up to the task of competing without humilating myself.

^^^^ Agreed. Not really in it for the whole competition thing when I am trying to learn, although it could be fun. I do understand they didn't have the best participation and how they dropped off. Curious is to how it will go when so many wouldn't even post up in a non competitive format......

They're may be some folks such as myself that are still practicing before posting. Troy's (Glacier Country) calls are awesome. Thanks man! But before, I was getting used to the Primos Ivory Plate which has the little raised metal piece over the latex. I don't know if that tab thing is like training wheels or what, but it does make it easier to get sounds out of for some reason. So now I'm working on getting consistent sounds out of the Glacier Country calls, which do not have that. I've got a nervous/popping grunt and a few locator bugles recorded, but the terminating high note isn't high enough on the locators. Sounds like a baritone bull.

Cool, thanks Troy! When I was practicing the bugles, I thought the note was high enough and maybe it is. I don't know how important it is to hit that exact high note that a lot of bulls seem to. But then after reviewing actual elk bugling, I'm probably 3 or 4 notes lower than the real calls that were recorded, but not a full octave. The Orange Enrager and Sweet Temptation are working very well. Just have to get to the point where I'm getting good bull sounds straight away, without having one or two false starts before hand. I don't think a couple of out of place honks or squaks are going to work well while in the field!

Shawn, I have that Primos Ivory Plate in my mouth as I type. I just can't get the thing to work. I am looking forward to the Elk Hunting Seminar with Jason Phelps on May 17th here on Bainbridge. I am going to pester him so badly he will never want to come back!

LOL, I guess everyone has luck with different calls! I can't remember exactly how the tab fit when I was activating it. I'd check out some of Paul's videos in the Tips and Clips section, where he demonstrates the proper postioning of the diaphragm in the mouth. This helped me out tremendously. I was not getting sounds from that call at all until I watched them. The seminar sounds like a winner, where is it being held? It is a haul for RJ, but maybe he'd want to come out also. I've heard pestering usually goes over pretty well. Thanks for the heads up!

Phantom16 & I will be putting some info up on the Contest in a new thread. For those that may read this in the meantime let it be known that this Contest is for you guys, not for pro-semi pro folks or any ones associated with making calls! We want this contest for those not in any profession, just good ole elk hunters! It seems the fairest way to do this as there are way more hunters out there that are not in the call industry than are. We should have some very good prizes as well. Thanks!

2) What does associated with making calls mean?

Craig, nothing too strict! (grin) Guys like Troy, Travis & Jason would be considered call makers or semi pro. You are eligible for sure since you are not a call maker or considered a pro that I know of. It's just a title because I know you are an excellent caller so don't get me wrong bud! It's just that a calling contest as this is for the newer & veteran elk hunters that are not competition oriented. Hope this helps!

Has anyone come up with a good way to record the sounds? I have the soundcloud app but listening to most recordings on here I don't think it's a best solution. Maybe youtube? Other?

Any tips for recording to get the most out of the sounds, like being outdoors rather than locked in an office?
