Tree stands

We left at 4 PM and arrived at our new camping spot around 1 PM the next day. By the time we have everything set up it was around 4:30. Is that to late in the day to walk an hour to set up a tree stand at a wallow? Well it chase off elk moving just before dark. Or is that just a whitetail thing and elk move all day long in early Sept. around the 7th

Friday: I have had elk, deer and bear come in to water while I was setting up my stand. I try to be reasonably careful, but have never been totally quiet either. If you have your bow close and what else you need, you can start hunting as soon as you have everything in place. In my way of thinking finishing your set up at 4:30 Pm is great. You have 3 to 3 1/2 hours left to hunt. That is plenty of time for an old bull to come in to your location.
This year I made a mistake and pulled away from a nearby stand when I saw Stringunner hauling out the head of his bull. I found out that he and his dad would be packing out his bull from very close by. Our stands are 130 yards apart. I figured that with all of the activity involved nearby, I would be better off going somewhere else. Well Stringunner and his dad finished their pack out about 7:00PM and my trail camera showedeither one or two bulls came to where my stand was at 7:30.

An arrow traveling at 300 fps takes .4 seconds to fly 40 yards. Yes, you have time to hunt.

The only place you can't kill an elk is in the tent. Go for it!
