We can all agree that a lot of great advice can be found on this site. What's the worst advice you ever got though? I'm not looking to blow anyone up here, but I think we can share some of the humor. The season is still a loooong 7 months away!

Worst advice I ever got? 145 grain broadheads for elk! If you ever want to put the arch back in archery, try shooting a 2216 aluminum arrow, 5 inch vanes, and a 145 grain broadhead out of a first generation bow with fastflight string!

I can't remember any truly bad advice on this forum that's really affected me, just differences of opinions in cases I do remember when I was much younger, a friends father told us both to "hunt up in the morning and down in the evening, and you'll always have the wind in your favor. He was about 1/3 right

Oh yea, one other thing - it wasn't advice but it went like this: "Yea, the truck is only about a mile if we go this way." I think I still have blisters on my feet from that little jaunt.

The elk I hunt spend all spring, summer & fall at around 9000ft unless pressured hard & then they just slip over onto a private ranch & feed in the hayfields.

They might help, but nothing will mask or conceal human scent from an elks nose.

A buddy and I always laughed when people would say "They're only active at first light, and last light, so we might as well be napping in camp."

I've heard that about every sort of game animal alive. And I continue to hunt all day, in one way or another.

Napping is the best way to spend your time? Seriously?

The worst piece of advice I got after my first elk hunt and first bow hunt in '08 when I got skunked was, go back to rifle hunting I never took that advice and love bowhunting now more than ever.

A piece of bad advice I did take came before my first bow hunt. "Cheap equipment is as good as expensive equipment" boy was I wrong. Now I don't skimp on my bowhunting gear.

A little off the subject but surely the sorriest thing ever said to me; and I post it here as maybe it will encourage at least one.

Well heck the 310 grains I have up front must be all wrong! I shoot the same 715 arrow out of my longbow and recurve.

Worst advice I ever received is no one hunts this area! Then you wake up in the morning and there are 10 camps around you.

Now the worst advice I ever gave was....... This climb will not be that bad. I turn around about 1/3 the way up and my buddy has that look of I HOPE YOU DIE. It was not that bad of a climb. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Elk don't bugle with wolves around. Hog wash !! Killed a 6x6 with a buddy last year and wolves were howling 150 yards away. In fact the more the wolves howled the more the elk bugled !! We snuck in on him and 3 cows and sent a arrow threw him !!

I hope people read that! I read posts all over the internet that say don't hunt western Montana, western Wyoming, or Idaho because the wolves have eaten all the elk. Public perception is waaaay worse than any real problems. There is still great hunting in those places as is obvious by looking at those of us who kill our elk there every year and like you said... they haven't forgotten how to talk either. With the internet people and media these days rumors spread like wildfire and people are way more likely to say the sky is totally falling than to pass on the good news.

TRUE STORY!!

my first elk hunt. we skirted private property. i mean we were right on the fence line in our honey hole. we told the game biologist our strategy, and he said.."damn, you make that climb up there..you will kill an elk"..

looking into the promise land..we saw ELK galore. it was like elk-a-palozza!! they were everywhere! bugling away. my one buddy, looked us straight in the eye and said.."hey, let's jump the fence and go over there and shoot an elk. we can drag it back over the fence"

we brought 3 non hunters with us to handle the meat and help call. hahahha..the advice almost made me pee laughing.. trespassing? and dragging an elk? sure dood.

needless to say, we did not take that advice. we did however call one over the fence. hehe.

Dang, I don't have anything nearly as funny as some of these gems. I guess the classic line from the so called "elk experts" that used to hunt in my area of SE Alberta **note the word USED to - funny how these experts never killed anything** was that "the elk don't call in this area - you make a bugle and they will be gone!" or "don't use anything but cow calls in this country, any bugle sound and the bulls will be over the next ridge before you can blink!". Love hearing people, to this day, spreading that word around. I'll just carry on calling in bulls with bugles every year (when the situation calls for bugling, of course). Those guys can keep bugling at the bulls from 250 yards away and wonder why they round up the girls and head out.

Worst statement by a fellow hunter: New guy to our camp heard all sorts of bugling going on in the valley above camp at 4 pm. Wind was still whip-sawing back and forth, as if does there every day until sunset. We warned him and his dad that they'd blow the elk up, to leave them alone for a few more hours.

"We're just going over the rim to have a look. We won't scare them or anything. We call elk in all the time in the afternoon."

So off they went. Those elk left and didn't come back for the rest of the season. My partner and I had been carefully hunting the herd bull in that drainage for the entire previous week, but only when the wind was right.

If you want to witness some really bad negative advise, just go to one of the other site's forums, and ask how is the ---- hunting in ---- unit. Warning: Be prepared to hear how incompetent the wildlife department is and how lazy the biologists are.

Haha, I remember when I gave MYSELF that horrible advice one day about 4 seasons ago. I was early morning and I had just parked my truck. I had no sooner turned my engine off and opened my door when I had 4 bulls sounding off about 500 yards to the SE of me. I knew exactly what these elk were going to do as they liked to feed on this one particular farmer's field all night then move back into the heavy timber just as the sun broke. Knowing more or less exactly where these elk were going to cross, but realizing I only had about 20 minutes to get there, I figured "heck, I don't need to lug my pack - I'm only going to X point and if I miss them I'll come back and grab my stuff". I ended up missing the elk crossing about literally 1-2 minutes and saw them about 100 yards ahead of me. This time I thought "heck, I can bird dog them for a few minutes and try to swing ahead of them seeing as I already came this far, if I can't catch them I'll run back and grab my pack!". Well, one thing led to another and 4 hours later I was waaaaaaay up in the middle of nowhere and really had no idea where I was. I ended up being 40 yards or less from the big 6x6 herd bull several times but could never get a clear shooting lane.

Once I figured it was time to get the heck outta there I realized how dumb I was. I had no compass, no GPS...I had nothing but my bow, rangefinder, calls, and 2 knives. I knew that if I kept trucking NW I'd eventually find my way out, albeit who knows how far away from my truck. Problem was that it wasn't quite so easy to figure out where NW was - it was an overcast day and the slope of the area I was in was anything but uniform - it was full up saddles, bowls, twists and turns. You couldn't simply ride the slope back down. Ended up spending the next several hours looking at the moss on the N side of the trees in order to find my way out. Really sucked when you'd get into a long stretch where the moss covered the whole circumference of the tree! Haha. Last time I ever went into the woods without my pack.

There was that 1 time I took my pack off and put it by that "really obvious" tree in order to make a quick play on a herd bull and ended up spending the next 3 hours searching for my pack that had my Swarovski's, top of the line GPS, several knives that were handed down to me, etc...All told around $5000 worth of gear, but that's another story....
