Video of First Elk Hunt

We just finished editing our Montana archery elk hunt from this fall and thought you guys might enjoy seeing it. It was our first time ever elk hunting and we had an awesome experience. We learned a lot on this trip and are definitely now addicted for life on elk hunting the rut. I would encourage anyone thinking of trying it to just go out and do it. Hope you enjoy, and we are always open to suggestions on how to make our videos better as we are trying to improve equipment and techniques every year. Very very nicely done. There are so many thing to be learned from that video. Quite a difference between about the 5 minute 30 second mark to the 15 minute 30 second scene!

Newbies... did you see that? After being all pumped up... after day 1 the attitude was pretty solemn. That's how it goes. Right away you'll realize this isn't television, Bowsite or the Elknut Forums meatpole... it's reality! It interested me that you guys did all your research to settle on the Pioneers but bailed out after just one day. Just goes to show that after a year of research and homework... location was a huge deal. One day and out the door to a new spot. It takes a lot of maps to make up the state of Montana. Which one do you call home???? Hard to say if you've never been there.

Then you moved over my way to the Bighole but... didn't see anything on the first day there either. More reality! But you stuck it out there. Moved a couple miles and found a whole new world. I'm glad you had a dose of reality before having things go your way. That's what makes you real elk hunters. I'm sure you agree now that it's all over that a few hard times makes success all the sweeter right!

The other thing I'd like to call some attention to is the cover. Everyone talks about north slopes and timber timber timber. That stuff you ended up in is my kind of country. You can't kill what you can't see. Also worth mentioning is that you probably could have hunted that country from your first camp. There's a lot of talk about plan A being to get X miles from the road right off the bat. That can help in places. But I tell lots of people.. in Montana you won't find a local hunter using a back country camp. Park & hunt! Sure you can add some adventure and atmosphere to your hunt by leaving the gravel behind. But it doesn't have to be plan A.

I loved the part where your partner blew your hair back bugling in the truck on the way out. The editing was great. All in all I thought it was a great account of a DIY elk hunt. Congratulations boys on a great hunt and a great video to save those memories forever!!! I really enjoyed that thanks. If there was stuff like that on tv I might actually start watching hunting shows again!

Indian Summer nailed it. I too enjoyed the video. Mr_steve, congratulations on a successful hunt. You have become an elk hunter when a hunt like this is more of a challenge than anything else. You are an elk hunter when the off season is spent thinking of ways to get revenge on those elusive critters. Learn, improve and keep on. Best wishes on your next elk hunt.

Awesome gentlemen. Very nicely done. Great filming, editing, and music selections. Saw your thread earlier but wanted to wait till I could put on my headphones and really check the video out. Gotta love them spikes . Always fun. Congrats on great preparation, ability to adapt and move in response to the situations you found yourself in, documenting, and successfully putting your first bow elk down. Really enjoyed it. RJ

Thanks for the kind words guys. I was not the shooter but the cameraman. We definitely had some beginner's luck and it took a lot of work to get it filmed too. And I don't want to even count the number of hours I spent editing. But boy has it been rewarding. We will be back to Montana this fall. Another reason we moved spots on that hunt that did not get mentioned is that three pickups with quite a bit of equipment were parked at the original trailhead we planned to hike back in at.

One of the biggest learning curves for us was knowing what the elk were saying. I studied Paul's stuff quite a bit before our trip but when you are there in the moment it gets tough. September can't come soon enough! Thanks again for the kind words.

Well guys I thoroughly enjoyed the video. At times I felt like I was on the hunt with you. Everything I saw is the way it is out there in the elk woods . You never know whats around the corner with the weather and what is coming up that you can't see yet. I know I am excited for this years hunt.I had my first shot at an elk but didn't getter done. I found them though and called em in,so I know what to do and how to do it. I just need to calm the nerves and then I will have a success/kill story like yours.I can't wait.Thanks again and best of luck to you this coming fall.
