(I should preface this with, if I ever post a dumb thread question that has been beat to death, please feel free to post the link to the thread)

What do you do to support your hobbies?

I'm a single income, family of four, mechanical engineer for a company that designs and installs medical interiors in flight for life helicopters.

With both kids in school full time I'm hoping one day my wife decides to go back to work... until then I have to be selective on the cash I get to spend on my hobbies. It's also tough in that I am trying to outfit my son as well for hunting.

i am a civil engineer. i do major State highway project for California. we divided the construction eng department into two groups. i am in the smaller group that deals with Structures. (buildings, bridges, and tunnels). been a great job so far. living where i live, we get the big jobs.

MRI and CT tech. We are pretty month to month money wise with just my income with three littlens, but I make sure I hunt every year. Job requires me to be on call one weeknight and one weekend a month. I have taken two bucks and a cow elk while on call. So it works pretty nice. Bigger hospital in a bigger town would mean more income, but it will be tough giving up my hunting time while getting paid. Might have to make the jump if I ever want to cash in my Utah bonus points.

I work for a defense contractor. I play with satellites and stare at a computer all day long. Not very exciting but it feels good to know that I am supporting our military in some small way.

I work for a General Contractor that builds big custom homes and medium sized commercial projects, as a project manager. As of late however, I had to fire a superintendent, so I have been thrust into his role as well. Not a bad thing, and as a company we are more efficient, and I get to keep track of my projects much closer an am able to cut down on a ton of overhead, but I am exxxtra busy right now, playing PM and Supt, and without a pay increase (which would have been great around the holidays!!).

I work very closely with John Fitzerald to keep our very own Swede under control which takes a great deal of forethought and vigilance For my paying job, I'm a Deployment Readiness guy on an Army installation. Retired from the Army 10ish years ago and went right back to work for Uncle Sam supporting and taking care of Soldiers. I got lucky to continue to do what I enjoy and believe in.

Retired U.S. Forest Service Timber Management, mostly oversight of the timber sale administration program. I have given up on trying to keep RJ and JF in line. That job is too much like being a cat herder. I am thinking about a second career though. It has to pay well, offer liberal time off especially in hunting season, and be fun. Potential employers should know, I have an acute hearing impairment. I can't hear a screaming boss anymore, and I can't handle high stress. If anyone knows of a job that meet these standards, I could be you man.

Im the construction dept and work as a Construction Project Coordinator, improving the learning and teaching environment of 26,000 students.
Being a long term employee I get plenty of vacation to watch my kids play college and HS sports and also do my hobbies.

I am looking forward to 5 more years before I enjoy the retirement community where hobbies comes first

super cool! i thought about signing my wife and i up for some backwood backpack trip where a guide leads us around foraging and teaching us what to eat. ends with a camp cook meal. seemed cool.

but i suspected the guide wouldnt/couldnt take us to any good spots because he also collected for restaurants and stuff. the outing was kinda expensive if i remember correctly.

Assistant Professor with Oregon State University, work for the OSU Cooperative Extension Program as a Youth Development Specialist. Not the highest paying job but gives me 30-45 days off annually (I spend them primarily during late August and all of September) and a really flexible schedule which is great considering my wife and I have three kids under 4.

Work in the engineering department (design) for a company specializing in slip form construction. Estimating - Flow Design - Working Drawings and proposals. Usually work in the field when the slip is under way. First year not coaching hockey for a long time and I am missing that at the moment.

Senior Project Manger for an offshore construction company(Oil&Gas). The company I work for is a family owned company that the owners are big time hunters which is nice. So when I need to get away instead of calling in sick, I call in hunting. It is tough during construction season but great during hunting season.

At least I get 12 weeks off plus 4 weeks vacation to temporarily forget this place to concentrate on graduating my " youth development specialist " program with 21 and 17 YO female instructors.

Hee,hee,hee, I was wondering if I would ruffle anyone's feathers. This place I work has over 200 millwrights that I'm 100% confident compete with one another to see how much they can tear up in the process of fixing "their" job. Additionally our engineers must laugh for years at us working on the electric stuff they designed and installed right next to steam pits, knock off showers and by 700 deg heater units

Did forget to mention I did millwright 3-4 years before switching over to this hard electric stuff.

MRI and CT tech.

I'm certified in XRay and CT as well, Ishy. I do Nuclear Medicine (Nuclear Cardiology) for a living, and I have worked PET/CT as well as Diagnostic XRay in years past.

All in all, I have worked 25 years in the Radiologic field, and almost 35 years considering other forms of diagnostic medicine. MRI was one of the only modalities I never got into, but I find it fascinating.

I'm a "Project Engineer" . . . NOT to be mistaken with a Project Coordinator . . . which is much more accurate. I work for a General Contractor as the middle man between Owners/Developers, Architects/Engineers, and Subcontractors. We do mostly commercial work. I just got done with this building, have been there from earthwork to spire. I had a hand in managing the Concrete, Steel and Curtain Wall for the Core & Shell, followed by running 4 tenant improvements on the interior buildout as a superintendent. Just got pulled back into the office to start budgeting for a new 4-story Apartment building set atop a post-tensioned deck (my first PT). We bid that middle of January and then it's full steam ahead writing contracts, processing submittals and tracking lead times while we wait for the ground to thaw enough for site scraping.

Wow, where to begin? My main job is in law enforcement, but I'm also an outdoors columnist (www.chieftain.com), a pheasant hunting guide (www.rockyfordupland.com), and I instruct a number of different classes, mostly with LE organizations, but also with the local college. On top of that I train bird dogs for fun and try to keep my kids in the field as much as possible.

ive been millwrighting for close to 8yrs, I have a chance at getting into the E&I department but right now I cant take a pay cut to get in the door. im still young but Im starting to feel the toll on my body. but there is some potential to move into a salary position down the road in a new mill we are building right now, it should be online in the later part of 2014

I was fortunate to have some electronic and electrical experience when, back in 98' the mill I was at shut down a section eleminating 100 Positions. In an effort to keep from putting folks out the gate they offered early retirement packages and took in some maint guys. They offered 5 of us GM's to switch over, I was reluctant at first but surely glad I did. They did allow us to keep our pay which was was a big help in deciding, me and two others had decided we were going anyway, but we're able to hold out and kept our $.

When they pulled the plug on the whole plant in 09' all the EI guys were offered transfers and most of us 1/2 assed guys were offered jobs locally before we were laid off. It sux to loose money but you aren't getting younger and the $ won't get easier later. Just saying consider it carefully.

I've been hit up a bunch to go salary but this place I'm at now treats their salary guys like crap. I like the shift work, going home clean 99% of the time, troubleshooting stuff and best of all wiping my mind clean of worrying about this place when I walk out the gate! Good Luck, Ishy. Like you said, MRI physics are insane, it's amazing they can produce images by re-aligning a person's hydrogen atoms, and bouncing radio waves off them...who thinks up this stuff?

The PET Exam was the hardest out of the 7 board exams I have taken. 3 hours and I think I barely passed it. I swore I would never take another board exam after that one. Let me know how it goes.

You said real job ok let me try again then. I have a oilfield communications company called Droptine Oilfield Rentals. I rent out cell phone boosters and rig phones to drilling rigs. Yep I'm the guy that climbs to the top of the drilling rig derricks !! I also set up tv and internet at camps via satellite.

I have also been busy with Wapiti River Outdoors. I hope to get out of the oilfield one day and follow my passion which is why I started Wapiti !!!

I was told the best plan...... was to plan ahead !!

I work as a firefighter paramedic, love my job. I have a great crew, all of them are hunters so the bs gets pretty thick at times. Also have three daughters that take up all my money and time to be honest I'm not sure how I can afford to hunt.

I'm a kill truck operator out in the oil fields of New Mexico and horseshoer for side money. I enjoy hunting fishing pretty much anything outdoors and just started building a drag car! I accrue 3 weeks of vacation a year in 2 more years ill be at 10 years hear abd get 4 weeks plus I get every other weekend off so I plan all my hunts around weekends off.

ah i coulda talked your ear off when i was a kid. got so bad my parents gave me an entire room in the house for all my reptiles, couldnt fit them in my bedroom. i was getting things like uroplatus and brookesia shipped in from madagascar before hardly anybody was captive breeding them, hell before hardly anybody had heard of them. used to buy my crickets like 2000 at a time. the noise drove my family crazy, but i didnt even notice it. was pretty obsessed. now with my career i cant even have a houseplant with any hope of keeping it alive. oh well.

I've probably had 30+ different jobs since graduating highschool. I'm a very well-rounded individual!
From 1997 to 2012 I worked in natural resources and have done everything from measuring big game winter range to tagging salmon at Bonneville Dam, to hooting for owls to surveying for rare cactus in the Uinta Basin oil and gas fields. I miss working in the woods, the small town life and living in some of the most beautiful remote places that my work afforded. Damn do I miss living in deer and elk country. But, it is hard to beat the stability of a year-round, full-time, permanent position. Something I did not have wrangling Sage-Grouse. LOL For a little over a year I've been working as the R&D Specialist for Trident Seafood's Smoked Salmon facility. I went from tagging and collecting data on salmon to developing Ready-To-Eat salmon products. One of my big projects I'm working on right now is a salmon jerky. All the experience I'm gaining as a food scientist and processing fish in different ways is easily transferable to big game processing/cooking/smoking. Kinda funny how my jobs end up somehow tying into my hunting in some way shape or form.
