Viper tricks or VPA's

Postby Toby » 12 16, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I have narrowed my Broadhead search to these two. I would appreciate advice on this. I shoot a 60# Elite E32, 28". Total arrow weight with a 125 grain BH will be about 400 grains.

now that's a tough call, the tricks have replacement blades, the VPAs can be sharpened and have a life time warranty, both fly like darts. the VPAs cost a little more. ( last time I checked ) my personal opinion is the VPAs are a stronger blade, better on splitting bone. im assuming you are talking about the terminators (3blade) no the penetrators (2 blade). ill post some links to another forum about these heads.

im looking at the penetrators, once I figure out for sure what grain head I want. 200, 250 or 300gr

heres a good link http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthrea ... =vpa+heads

did you start a thread on A/T? one was started just posted a few minutes ago with the same title.

this is a quote from the owner of VPA his name is ray, his handle on A/T is rayzor43

"We make no claims of them being indestructable (no broadhead is) but there are no 3 blade broadheads on the market that are tougher ours.

VPAs are satisfaction guaranteed. If you are not happy with your purchase we have no problem exchanging or refunding your money."

yeah, there is a lot of bull on that site but I "think" I have a good enough knowledge base to navigate it and not step in it.

Ha Ha!

Between the two heads you mention I prefer the Viper Tricks over the VPA 3-blade 125grn, I just don't care for the steep angle on the blades that the VPA sport on their 100 & 125grnheads, other than that they are a very tough head & yes I've shot them both. We've taken 3 bulls in two years with the Viper Tricks 125grn, two bulls with the same head too! The chisel tip the Viper Trick has is a real bone splitter. I've been impressed with it & it's penetration even at 65# 27"-1/2" draw.

I did start a similar thread on AT.

Elknut, I agree 100% about the steepness of angle on the shorter, 100's ans 125's.

I have been thinking about the 175's, long and lean.

I only shoot 60#'s with a 28" draw, so want to maximize penetration potential.

what arrows are you planning on using? with a 175 they will need to be fairly stiff. my son has the same specs as you, hes shooting a 125gr head with a 400 spine. id say you would need at least a 350 spine maybe a 300 even but I doubt it. im assuming your arrows are in the 27-28" range

there is a line where the added weight and speed loss will have a negative effect, bigger pin gaps or long yardage tape for a slider sight, a slow arrow with lots of weight can be out preformed by a lighter arrow moving faster. maybe I need to take my own advise on this. nah im still testing :D

I have not shot the Viper tricks and this year was my first year shooting the VPA (125gr) but I do have a few observations. I shoot 68# @ 27". The VPA's all spun perfectly out of the box but had a fairly dull edge. No problem since I shot them at foam for a while preseason and then sharpened them before hunting. The thick blades were a little tough to get a good edge on - just because they're so thick. But I think that is what makes them such a tough head. I missed a buck and stuck the arrow in a sapling. The head looked good but wouldn't spin anymore - toast. Then I shot two into my bull. One hit the shoulder and actually went in between the two leg bones, carving out a channel of bone and sticking into the far side of the joint. That head didn't curl the tip or roll any of the blades over - pretty impressive. The third one passed through bone and muscle and did a great job of cutting things up.

All three heads had to be retired after the season because they wouldn't spin anymore - bent ferrule I assume. I think the blades are just about indestructible. If your worried about the head holding up for penetration- don't.They're tough. If you want to keep shooting animals with the same head over and over I don't think it's likely...

I have .400 spine Goldtips, cut to 27.5", so if I went with 175 VPA's I would probably need .340's, which would bring my total weight to about 475 grains as compared to a .400 Goldtip with a 125 Vipertick weighing about 390 grains.

I'd rather not use the 125 VPA's due to their angle, as Elknut mentioned.

If I was sure the 125 Vipertricks would do the job, I would probably go with them.

Toby, don't be concerned with the Viper Trick, it's as tough as a head comes these days. You will be close to maxing out the 400 spine but at 27-1/2" arrow & 60# draw (which is what length arrow I shoot) I believe the 175grn head will still tune!

I'm considering a Recurve this year for my elk hunts & if I do I will be using the VAP 175grn heads you refer too, I have a few of them here & they are sweet as well as very easy to razor up, great head!

Thanks Paul.

I think the profile of the 175's should make it a penetrating machine. I may geta few and see if they will tune.

I agree, it has that very nice 3-1 ratio, if you'd like I can send you one to tinker with, let me know? I can also send a Viper Trick 125 your way if you'd like to play with that one too? PM your address if interested. Thanks!
