Working on calling

I am working on calling and i am geting good almost as good as my dad.

My favorite call is the Orange Enrager. What does everyone think about this call?

I think if it works well for you then you should stay with it & master it. As long as you have complete confidence in the reed you will do well! Give p[ops a run for his money! (grin)

I think that's great! I agree with Paul in that you will do well with what you have confidence in. Being any reed you choose. My input would to always push yourself to improve, we all can improve no matter how good we feel we are doing. This could mean trying different reeds to achieve different sounds or just the little things such as low moans, high pitches, and etc. Keep it up!

He's doing really well and practices every night. Very impressed on how easy he picked it up.

John jr, You are on the right track learning to use a diaphragm call. The only thing I would warn you about is, do to let your dad know you are getting good at it. When he is around try to sound like a sick turkey. That way he will always call for you and not vice versa. Keep up your practicing.

Your dad is using reverse psychology on you.
Listen to Swede... he speaks the truth.

You will find this out when you go hunting as your dad will be set up out front of you
or he will say he forgot his calls.

Practice the 'sick turkey' at home, practice elk calling by yourself somewhere, it will pay dividends

I like to teach new callers how to call by learning calls in this order.
1.Learn the high pitch of the calf...this teaches you how to put about the right camber in your tongue when you learn the bugle later on.
2.Learn the cow sounds...This teaches you how to get good sounds with mid tones and tongue control. Drop your jaw slowly not your tongue! This way you don't get that sharpness to the end of your cow calls.They will end in a more mellow more realistic sound.
You will have to use the Sweet Temptation for best results on this.
3.Learn how to get to the high pitch of the bugle,coming from a mid tone. So No Growl on the beginning of the bugle.
Start with a mid tone kind of a goose sound,light air and tongue pressure, let the reed break on its own to the next higher pitch, and then put more air and tongue pressure to the latex to the high pitch.Hold that pitch for a long second maybe 2 for location bugles, then growl it off.
4.Ultimately you will want to learn how to start your bugle with a growl... There are many ways to do this.... kind of make a light saber sound or a weed wacker sound. This still starts you off closer to a mid tone but adds some raspiness to your bugle. The longer you stay on the low tones the more air you lose exponentially on the higher notes. Most of the time,the Higher notes are more important.IMO. So I try to get out of the low tones pretty quick.
I hear guys that stay on the low tones for over a second and wonder why they can't hit the high notes as easily as we do. Partly because they have already lost half their air. Hope this helps---> Troy
