External Calls

With a lot of attention given to calls and calling I would like to hear some professionals talk in depth about external calls and calling.

Always thought that being I have a permanent bridge with missing parts that I could not use a reed call, but with all the discussion about reeds and calling maybe I should mess with it a bit more.

If all you do is simple cow calls and simple bugles, you don't need a internal reed.

I always teach that elk have two basic instincts. One, the need to survive. And two, the need to breed.

Calling elk in an attempt to bring them in will force the second instinct to over power the first. External calls give you a little fuel to achieve this. But if you really want to over power the first, internal reeds are the way to go. Why, because with a internal reed you can communicate better by making more appriopriate sounds.

Here's a few sounds that I can make with my internal but not my external.

1) Grunts
2) Chuckles
3) Lip Bawl
3) Estrus Buz
4) Nervous Grunt

And let me note, these calls are 4 out of the 6 top sounds in my arsenal.

Well your .02 cents is very valuable info. Thanks! I think I am going to try again with internal reed and practicing with external. I want to make some of them Kool sounds I heard this year. Very fun year for me.

And hats off to you for taking and calling in a bull for a young hunter this year. Thought that was awesome of you.

I don't see where a bridge would mess you up all that much. Guess it all depends on the placement of it. This past summer I got a full set of uppers. That really messed up my calling as it changed my whole upper palate and here was very little feeling there . So now when I get serious with calling, I just take them out and go for it. It did take a time or two to get the placement of the diaphragm right in my mouth. But it didn't take all that long to figure it out.

But if you feel you need an external reed call, there are all kinds of cow calls out there. And for bugles an grunts, it is just hard to find anything that sounds better than Elknuts XTR or the E.L.K.Inc. Power Bugle.

That's interesting WW. What part of my issue is. There is a tooth missing in center under bridge. Was permanent caps then had an Apiccoectomy. But any way. I do appreciate info. I do have both of ElkNuts xtr bugles, I used the one to call in the bull I shot and did have some really cool conversation with others. Will be doing what I can to enhance calling.
