Ulmer edge, Rage,or Slick trick

Well boys I'm heading west for my first elk hunt. Narrowed my broadhead search for this hunt to those 3 broadheads. I shoot a Reezen at 70lbs with a 400 grain arrow shooting about 290fps.

1. Ulmer Edge- accuracy, rear deployed blades for good entrance hole, large cut. ( Seems people are using them for bigger game not just mulies, and whitetails)
2.Rage- large cut, new retention system, rear deployed blades like UEdge, accurate. ( not sure how they will stand up to the bigger boned elk)

3. Slick trick- lots of different kinds to choose from. ie. grizz trick, magnum trick, etc. fixed blade, sharp blades (4 blades compared to 2) sound like they are very accurate as long as you spin test them.

So my question to you guys is what would you choose between the 3. I'm very confident shooting to 60 yards, but my guide said he figures most shots won't be 30 yards. My guide doesn't care what I shoot.

If you have shot one of the above broadheads let me know how they preformed for you. Also were you happy with how sharp the blades were?

Whichever comes in 150g So you can get your arrow weight up!

I've shot a whitetail with a Rage. It was impressive to say the least. If I was to elk hunt though, I'd try the Ulmer Edge for sure. I like the design better.

With that said though, I use and prefer Slick Trick standard 100's 1" dia for four reasons. One, they are hitting where my field points are out to 70 yards as of last night. Two, mechanicals are illegal to use in Idaho. Three, fixed blades are simple and you don't have to worry about snagging them on brush when spot'n stalk hunting. Four, they are tough. This one was retired after I hugged the shoulder a little too close on an elk last year. I hit the shoulder but it still penetrated and "killed him dead" as my kids like to say.

Bnsafe I am heading to CO. I'm never heard they were illegal. I can't find anywhere that says they are illegal. I think my guide would have told me when I asked him what BH I should use???

Also I was leaning towards the Ulmer Edge. Anyone have thoughts on them?

The ulmer edge is a good head... Only mech. I would use on elk.


That being said, I have never seen a reason to risk a mechanical on elk. Fixed blades cannot fail, plain and simple. Any head out of any tuned bow can be made to hit right with FP's out to 50+ yards.

I have shot the SlickTrick standards in 100gr. the past few season, I am shooting 125gr. Grizz tricks this year.

Kevrod3, it appears that mechanicals are legal in CO as listed in the link below. It is a hot debate as to whether or whether not to use them on elk or other large big game animals. If your bow is tuned properly, I would certainly avoid them and opt for a fixed blade BH. Just my opinion. Of the three you mentioned, slick trick would be my recommendation.

100 gr. Slick trick magnums all the way. Durable broadhead with a lot of cutting surface. Mech are illegal in Idaho but even if they were I wouldn't risk them failing on elk.

Though mechs are certainly not illegal here in Colorado, I would rather use a quality fixed. Good luck!

I use the 100 gr slick trick standards 1" have always flown just like my field points I say why go mechanical when so many fixed blades fly so well. But that is my own thinking and have friends that have had success with the other heads. As long as you hit them where your supposed to they will all work and kill elk. Having confidence in the one you choose is the most important to me

rage are devastating on elk ive seen 3 elk taken wiyh ragesnow on one a sapling deflected the arrw low and it basically guuted the elkwas pretty crazy. Rage will be in my quiver my next elk hunt

I would never use a mechanical on elk, They make a huge hole and blood trail, but only if they open. Found too many elk the last 5 years with Rage heads in them that did not open. Nice 6x6 last year. I pulled the arrow and all 3 blades were still locked. Ulmer edge is too new to say, but Dan Evans, owner of Trophy Ridge is a big time elk hunter, and he sells quality gear. Bottom line, a good hit always brings them down with a good head. We are fortunate to have a lot of quality heads on the market. I personally like Shuttle T Lock 100's and have had great success with them.

Hopefully at the end of my hunt in September I will have some results from all three broadheads to compare. I'm shooting Slick Trick Standard 100's, my brother is using Rage, and one of our hunting partners is using Ulmer Edge. I'm anxious to see how they will compare.

Slick tricks are lethal and shoot very true on a properly tuned bow. I use standards and viper tricks on elk, whitetails, and hogs.

Slick tricks they are built just like the G5 stikers I shoot. Vary tuff heads that fly great. The only thing I use a expandable for are turkeys.

Have you looked at the shuttle t locks at all?? IMO best head on the market, seen several elk fall with this head, and it shoots just like your field point.

I had a buddy that shot the shuttle T's whitetails a couple of years ago. he said they flew pretty well but they didn't impress him all that much.

I can't believe how much you guys like the Slick trick! A couple of people have said that I'm shooting to light of an arrow at only 402gr. that's with a 100 gr. point. I'm shooting tacks to 60 with my set up now... and the Ulmer edge only comes in 100's... so I guess if you guys think I should change and go the 125's then I would be shooting the Slick trick mag 125gr...... Thoughts?!

I have never used Ulmer Edge, I have seen what a Rage does to a bear [bears are not a thick skinned animal like elk are]
I use Slick Tricks and have great confidence in them with lots of dead elk by them

A 402 gr arrow is not a light arrow.
Granted there are heavier arrow users and there are lighter arrow users.

I have taken many elk with a 380gr arrow and now I use 420gr arrow.

If your 402gr arrow flight is good, with both field points and BH hitting the same, by all means use it

Used a 400 grain arrow tipped with Slick Trick Mag with no complaints. This year, changing the set up for a little heavier arrow (GT Kinetic 300) tipped with Slick Trick Xbow (150 grains) for a total weight around 500 grains. Hope to send just one arrow to the boiler room comes September.

Just bought the slick trick standard's as I have been using the Rage for the past 3 years in Idaho, which I didn't know were illegal until about 2 months ago. Never shot. Switched to Rage from Thunderhead 100's as they wouldn't fly true from my bow.
I got them because of the recommendations of Cnelk and others on this sight. They fly very true and I am happy with my selection. Hopefully I'll get to try them out on a bull this year.

NOT rage! Bad experience eith an elk. Hit spot on but did crazy things on impact. Just not good enough for elk bones.

I got about 4" of penetration on an antelope with a rage head the first year they came out....never to be used again. People kill stuff with them but I don't.

My buddy uses slick tricks and has great results. I don't have any personal experience with slick trick or ulmer edge.

I've really been happy with the Ulmer Edge, and will shoot it for a long time to come. Flight, penetration and versatility have been excellent. If I were to switch (I won't be) I'd give the QAD Exodus a try.
