Hello All, I have just been invited to go on my first Elk hunt in Colorado (or anywhere) and I am super excited. I have not had much chance to search around the forum yet, but I will in the coming weeks for sure. Any tips for a first timer?

Welcome to "the" elk forum friend. Thanks for jumping on board. Tips? When and what type of hunting will you be doing? Bow, rifle, smoke pole? Basecamp hunting, day hunts, backwoods? For any type of elk hunting, I'd recommend you start with the ElkNut Tips and Clips on top of this page to wet your whistle. Then, start pouring through the threads for the past few years... Some good info here for sure that will lessen your learning curve. Again, welcome. RJ

I will be hunting the 2nd rifle season from a base camp/day hunts. Being from Maine I will not have an opportunity to physically scout the area until arriving. Thanks for the warm welcome.

wELKome to the forum. Here is the #1 tip for elk hunting. NEVER pee into the wind! But ALWAYS hunt into it! There's alot more truth than joke to that statement.

welcome and congrats on your first elk hunt. you are in for a treat. as far as advice like others have said read the forums. you could spend the rest of your time just reading past questions and almost all of your answers are gonna be there already. make sure you read pauls tips and clips, theres alot of gold there. after that dont be shy, ask any question you need or just want some clarification on. this is a great site and folks will help you here instead of bash you. obviously, get in shape. get in the best shape of your life then go a little further. good binocs and boots are a must (and when i say good boots i dont necessarily mean a 400 dollar pair, only ones that fit you extremely well and wont cause blisters, same with binocs get the best you can afford but dont spend the kids college fund on them). and most importantly, enjoy the hunt with all its sites and smells and experiences. killing an elk is a bonus.
