We got our deer tags. Haven't used any elk points. I got the shaft on pronghorn. Wife drew again, I still didn't. She drew the tag as second choice last year. So that's now two buck pronghorn tags for her. We both had 1 pref point and it was supposed to be a 0 point unit. Guess it got even more popular this year. I'll pick up a doe tag.

Meanwhile, mule deer herds continue to decline in parts of the state despite drastic license reductions in recent years, indicating harvest is not the primary factor reducing population size. Some sportsmen suggest an overabundance of predators, such as bears, is an underrated contributor to the decline.
The population estimates declined by 10 percent or more since last year in seven of 55 deer herds statewide. The far western portions of the state saw the greatest declines, with five of the seven declining herds located on the Western Slope. The statewide post-hunt 2012 deer population estimate is 408,000, compared with 418,000 in 2011.

Yet some herds — particularly those in the northern and central mountains — are doing well, leading to increases in population sizes and hunting license numbers in those areas. In 2013, the state is offering 82,600 deer licenses to an anticipated 160,000 applicants, an increase of 2,800 licenses (4 percent) from 2012. The predicted 2013 deer harvest is 32,000, about 1,000 fewer than last year.
There are no license increases for herds in far western Colorado that have been declining in recent years, and doe licenses are only increased in units where deer populations exceed objectives. The predicted posthunt population estimate in 2013 is 414,000, a slight increase but still far below the current statewide population objective range of 525,000-575,000 spanning 55 deer herds.

Elk licenses remain virtually unchanged from 2012 to 2013, dropping slightly (1 percent) to 138,300. The predicted 2013 elk harvest is 43,000, similar to last year's harvest of 43,500 achieved through the combination of limited licenses and over-the-counter licensed hunting.
The statewide elk population estimate was 266,000 in 2012, compared with 265,000 in 2011. The anticipated 2013 harvest would yield a posthunt population of 261,000 elk, nearing the statewide objective of 220,000-260,000. Distribution of those animals is another matter, however.

After a 21 percent reduction, pronghorn licenses will be much harder to come by in 2013, particularly in the southeast region. The number of limited rifle licenses available this year is 19,000, down from 23,900 in 2012. Decreased pronghorn numbers, overcrowding and record-low hunter success (48 percent success in 2012) led to the reduction three years after a record harvest of 12,300.
Statewide, the pronghorn population is estimated at 67,000, down from the peak of 79,000 in 2010.


Moose licenses remain the most difficult to attain in the state. About 16,500 applicants competed for 219 moose tags in 2012. This year, 228 moose licenses are available as populations continue to increase. An estimated 2,300 moose reside in Colorado.
