Do any of you carry arrows for birds or coyotes or maybe birdshot for your bear gun for grouse?
I have a buddy that while on a deer stand often shoots (at!) squrrils and grouse with a slingshot
Im thinking of some bird arrows for next year

I have taken a few grouse with my single field-tipped arrow over that last few years. Makes for a great lunch.

What would be helpful, is a few suggestions of how to cook a grouse over a fire, with only the tools of a "backcountry hunter". I don't hunt anywhere near my truck, so my Grouse, while the taste is always great, is ALWAYS DRY! Anybody have any tips of what to carry with you and what container to avoid dry grouse breast?

I always carry an arrow with a blunt point on it. Love shooting grouse with my bow, heck, on years I rifle hunt, I`ve been known to go out grouse hunting with my bow in Sept.

I always carry an arrow with a judo tip to shoot once in a while and have shot several grouse with them.

Used to carry one judo point tipped arrow all the time when I used aluminum arrows.. Carried one mostly for warm up shots or mid day practice at rotten stumps, and, to toast a fat blue grouse if I felt the urge. I haven't used one (judo point) since I started with the carbons a few years back. Not sure how the faster carbons will do (survive) when they hit something on the other side of a bird? If I'm elk hunting I'll use a small backpacking stove rather than build a fire. It is usually too dry and the threat of starting a forest fire is too high, especially with all of the beetle kill as well as spruce budworm damage. Plus the smoke from the fire puts a damper on how well I can smell elk. All I can smell is campfire. One of the joys of hunting elk, for me, is being able to smell the difference between a live animal upwind versus elk scent on the ground.

For cooking, I like to cut all of the meat off the breast, cut the legs off, and place them in foil between slices of onion and lemon wedges. Then I cook them as slowly as possible on the lowest heat and at least 6 inches off the flame. It's worth the effort. Then all of the waste goes into a ziplock bag. I think they typically turn out well as long as I have the time.

Although I like a judo point, my favorite head us much cheaper and it works like a charm when the bird is sitting on a branch and I have to aim skyward. I use a regular field tip with a fender washer behind it. I bend the fender washer slightly so that it's angled forward. When that head hits a bird, all vital signs flat line. I've used them successfully on carbon arrows. Most of the time I'm able to retrieve my arrows, assuming I hit the bird.

Naa Naa Naa. I am not sure that is the way the goat in the commercial would spell out his reply. Anyway, I am elk hunting. It is rare that I divert from that single focus.

I used to carry a blunt, but since I went to a smaller, lighter set up with a 4 arrow quiver, I only carry 4 evenly matched arrows. I usually have multple tags, deer, bear, elk so the four hunting arrows might be needed, especially if I shoot a few wayward shots.

I carry 4 broadheads and one Bludgeon blunt. I used to use the Judo until I saw the high shock impact of the Bludgeon on my bag target.

But if I do shoot at a grouse, I make sure its one that on the ground, as they are not worth seeing your $15 arrow go into blue sky, even after smoking thru it.

bow hunting, if anything legal walks under the stand or with in range and the mood strikes me, watch out. but rifle hunting most times it's my target game only. Reason being my bow will not scare away anything right around the hill from me.

I am a lot more conservative than I used to be when flinging a arrow. 1 Arrow-with broadhead= $25.00 Not like the old days when I shot wood or aluminum arrows.

My hip quiver holds 8 arrows. I usually load it up with 5 or 6 BHs and a couple judos... most of the time.
I will take a grouse or two sometimes, if we really need it... most of the time we don't though.
The judos are mostly for mid-day shooting sessions when we're packed in to the spike camp... no target in there.
Sometimes we spike for 6 or 8 days in a row, without coming out.
I don't like to go that long without any shooting practice.

In our camps in Oregon we all buy an elk, deer, bear and cougar tag.
We have seen both bear and cougar on our water hole cams during daylight hours.
Oddly enough never a coyote or fox.
One of our group killed a cougar last year from his tree stand.
We have killed many grouse with blunts.
