New guy from NY

Hello Everybody.

I just found this site about a week ago and after ready practically every post, it seems like there are a lot of great people here with a lot of knowledge. A little about myself, grew up in PA until I joined the Air Force. Stateside bases were Montana for 4 years and Colorado for 7 years. Now, unfortunately, I'm stuck in New York.

This September will be my first trip back to Colorado since leaving there in '05. I'm going to attempt a backcountry hunt and had a few questions if anyone could help. First, I have 23 days off from work, factor in driving to and from CO, I figure I have a good 17-18 day's to hunt; would you suggest hunting from Sep 1-19 or Sep 8-26? I'm kind of learning towards the latter because from what I can remember the bulls always seemed quiet the first half of the season and I don't really know the area well that I will be hunting, which leads into my next question; I'm looking at going into the Raggeds Wilderness, any info on the area would be much appreciated. Not looking for honey holes or anything, just trying to find out if it receives a lot of pressure or is overrun by cattle.

Welcome to the forum Rojix. It is hard to get dogmatic over what part of the season is best. I prefer the early season and get most of my elk the first week. The next best time for me is the last week. As far as I am concerned it is all good, but you are right the bulls usually quieter the first half of the season.

Welcome to "the" elk forum friend. Oh, and thank you for your service.. I know ka ka about Colorado but I prefer the latter part of the season as the elk are more vocal. Best of luck in whatever you decide. RJ
