One or two tips before you head out…

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 08 26, 2025 •  [Post 1]

to elk hunt this year. We’ve ran this type of thread/topic many times over the years here and on the former Elknut forum and I personally, always get something new to add to my tool kit. Many years ago WW offered the tip of carrying a small spray bottle of peroxide for blood trailing; I never go hunting without it now. OK, please offer a tip or two that had worked for you as you have entered the elk woods. It really is, the most wonderful time of the year. ;)

It may be too late for Swede,,, But prep your stomach with camp food or maintain your diet from home to camp.

Ive never had problems: but have hunted with others a change of diet can mess up the whole hunt

Learn how to do the “one leg leaner”

This couple minutes of watching this will change your hunting career if you struggle with pooping in the woods ;)

Chapstick. Baby wipes.

Pro Tip: Don't use the chapstick where you use the baby wipes.

Game bags can take up quite a bit of valuable space in your pack. So, get out your food saver and vacuum seal them. You'll be amazed at how small you can reduce them.

Get a packet of Wound Seal to keep in your field first aid kit. Walmart now carries it online.

WW you reminded me of one. If you are hunting with a partner, unless you plan on doubling, you can each tote half the game bags. no sense in having 2 full sets. In the event you do double, you can usually stuff some really full and leave them there. you are not carrying out 2 elk in one trip anyway. Well Swede might. By himself. With one arm.

For you bow hunters, wax your string and have a “screw checking/tightening session” with your Allen set before you roll to the elk woods. Those rest, sight, quiver, etc. screws have a way of loosening themselves

Just a bunch of crappy ideas

I use to park a cheek on a turned out front pickup tire

My RV has a toilet,,,When desperate Ill use a plastic bag,,, no flushing,,,,,well flushing wouldn't work in sub zero temps

Never found a need for a tree in the woods, get to business, get it done.

This year a heated Bidet

I was already in camp when this thread got started so I am behind on the curve here. Here are a few things I consistently get wrong. I overstock everything from food and clothing to the arrows I take along on the hunt. I have something for many contingencies. Everyone in camp has more than enough. I need to lighten up my truck and trailer load. I need to tell myself I am not moving but just visiting.

Another thing that seems funny now but wasn't the day it happened: On the day I got the elk, early in the morning I drew my bow back just to check it out. I forgot that I had left my release on the string so when I drew the bow the string came off the eccentrics. I had to take the bow to the nearest bow shop and get it set back up. That took about 8 hours because of the distance and difficulty of finding an open archery store.
At the archery store I had the technician reduce the draw weight so then I had to adjust my sights when I finally got back to camp. That day started off as a big loser. I had no idea what the Lord had in mind. In the end I realized again I am not in control of things, but the Lord is.
I guess my tips are #1. don't over prepare. #2 Allow for things that go wrong and #3. trust the Lord. He is good.
