2022 WapitiTalk Photo of the Year Contest - Winner!

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 01 24, 2023 •  [Post 1]

It’s time to vote on the WapitiTalk 2022 Photo of the Year Contest. All 2022 monthly winners (March thru December) have automatically been entered. Please take a few minutes to review the photos and vote for your favorite. There are two threads with images to vote on; only vote for one photo (I had to create two threads to get all the contestant images listed). Below were the rules for the monthly submissions.

1. One photo submission allowed per month, per member (yep, MODs may enter a photo also).
2. Photo must relate to the monthly theme (or risk being disqualified).
3. Do not use photo editing software to enhance your photo. Just post the photo as it was taken with your camera, smart phone, trail cam, etc. You may have to resize some photos so they are accepted by the forum software.
4. You may use older photos you have on hand, but, do not submit a photo that has won a previous WT photo contest.
5. Any WT member may enter a photo they have taken or star in.
6. Judging – WT members will vote on monthly photo submissions.
7. Contest period will normally end the last day of the month.
8. Winner must contact WapitiTalk1 via PM and provide mailing address for prize (your prize may be sent directly from a WT sponsor or from RJ).
9. Prizes will vary from month to month.

The prize for the Photo of the Year is to be determined.

I had to go with #7 and its not even my photo. Hard to believe, I know.

But it is a great picture of a beautiful bull elk.

Since this is an elk hunting website a photo of anything else is, well, not a picture of an elk.

BTW, shouldn't there be a poll for best Swede photo?

WWhitey is correct, it’s my bad. I’ll get another photo up for December; I’m temporarily locking the thread until I get it fixed up.

OK, I've removed the dual beagle image and we now have "two" photo choices for DEC 22 (#9 or #10). Lefty and Billy Goat tied so I've placed both their images in the poll voting. If you choose one of these as your photo of the year selection, please make a comment in the thread identifying which of the two you chose. I can only list up to 10 poll questions with our page software so I had to improvise a bit :?...... so make sure you make a note of which DEC 22 photo you chose (if you choose one for the photo of the year) in the thread. Geesh, that was exhausting.

I clearly said quantity would be a deciding factor. If you wish to win this prestigious award, send both, dont go skimping me. Is already promised me quite a supply. Rent a uhaul, do what you got to do, im the swing vote.

I sent jerky to a select few individuals I felt were susceptible to bribery, hopefully the packages make it in time. No faith in USPS.

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 02 23, 2023 •  [Post 18]

After a few weeks of voting for the WT Photo of the Year, 7mmfan pulled out the win by one vote! As always, thanks to all who entered the monthly contests, and, to all who took a few minutes to vote each month and during the yearly contest. The prize, a complete calling package from Wapiti River Outdoors, will be heading to 7mmfan's door within a week or so. WRO is waiting on a brand new batch of elk slaying tubes to arrive; once he gets those in, I'll work with Travis to get the calling package on its way. As always, please lean towards our forum sponsors when you're looking at outdoor gear ;).

There's probably more like 12 or 15 feet of snow there given the snow we've had this year. I had high hopes of doing some July scouting in there but I don't know that it will accessible until August this year. You have to ford a river to get to this area and it's going to be running high and wild for a long time this year.

A little story about this spot. I had been e-scouting this area for a long time, but had never set foot in it. I imagined it would be an ok place to look for deer during our September wilderness deer season, and assumed there would be bear around. I had marked up my On-x and Google Earth maps significantly, marking assumed access routes, glassing points, etc.... I finally connected with an individual whom I knew had experience in the general area just to get his take, and he sent me images of his maps, with virtually identical marks based on years of hunting the ground. So I was off to a good start! Him and I spent lots of time on the phone discussing the ground and how best to access it, it was no joke. The distance wasn't extreme, 3-4 miles from the parking spot, but it was constant gain, close to 3000 vertical feet in that distance. When I broke into the high basin right at daylight, I was treated to a bonanza of fall colors, ancient burned trees, avalanche chutes choked in scrub alders, and blue berries bushes everywhere! You couldn't go 10' without encountering a giant purple pile of bear crap. I expected within the hour one of us would shoot something. At the end of the day, the berries appeared to have dried up in the week prior to us arriving, and the bears had left. The drought we experienced all summer into fall had dried up all the lush green forbes the deer were there for, and they too had vacated. I found one fresh set of deer tracks not far from where I took this picture, way high on the ridge cutting around a band of cliffs between two ultra thick avalanche chutes. They were big tracks too. If only I'd had more time to setup shop on that ridge and watch the little openings around those chutes for the next couple days, I just may have been able to lay eyes on him. It's the kind of place that was so difficult to access, so physically demanding to be in, saw virtually zero signs of life while in there, and I cannot wait to get back into it.
