very cool! when i found your page initially i read every story several times, just looking for clues and patterns.... cool there are some new ones! i need to make time and start getting you my stories, i pursue them a lot, and have had many encounters the past few years, both on purpose and accident. love reading lion encounter stories.

i run trail cams from Dec-june/july, and their only purpose is lions..... they are cool critters and epitomize elusive. i have a ridge behind my house that has lots of lion traffic, with scrapes every 1-200yds for over a mile at least, some scrapes will have 3 different direction scrapes in the one scrape.... either the same cat hitting the same scrape several times, from different directions of travel through the same intersection where the scrape is.... crazy area.

it's coastal NF land and i'm having a really hard time finding decent setups to call, any place i sit down facing up hill, there is no way you would ever see a lion come in through the ferns... i really need a tree stand to hunt this ridge

thanks again for supplying the resources you do!

HS Football coach visits friends, they go cat hunting, he runs the stand with his ICOtech and RainShadow sounds.... and he goes 2 for 2 on lion stands (even though he didn't do the shooting!)

No, that isn't 'typical' either!

I told him, someday he'd have the satisfaction of having 30 dry stands in a row... but he's just a beginner, so he can't expect to get to that level immediately!

I will post the story as soon as I get it from the shooter!

Just Posted R21. Great story by the young hunter, and great post-shot video by the Coach!

Distress and 3 different RainShadow vocals, predominantly "RS S Live Whistles" brought in a young cat. Great story! Lots of fun interacting with these guys over the past couple weeks!

I've been noticing that the call in story page is getting quite LONG!

One thing I've found that you can do to consume it is to have your computer or device read it to you. That way you can reload, or drive or whatever.

You have to kinda focus to get much out of the robot voice, but it does work.

For the computer, for instance, you go to the page, click where you want to start, and then right click, and then click "Read Aloud" or press Control and Shift and U at the same time.

Just a little life hack!

The nearby units fill the quotas quickly.
Weve had them in our rural neighborhood this summer a few times. Had one 33 feet away from me in the yard August 2nd.

So, it's Fall time again!

Just a reminder, that I want cougar hunting stories... even if they happen during a deer hunt, or just driving to town!

Just Posted O38 on the webpage! http://www.rain-shadow.com/cougar-callin-stories.html

A friend of mine on a "fresh" sighting!

Good luck this year, guys and gals!

Electronically delivered sound sequences and tutorials are still available on the website. Also building hand calls for cougar and everything else, and still doing custom knives! Baby girl is getting older so I can get some more shop time as things progress!

Son, Alex, is still doing budget blades. (1st year of college from home, janitor at our church, studying wildlife biology.)

Son, David, is able to do pens and letter openers, but is moving to focusing more on cleavers and swords and more complicated stuff! (Jr year, homeschool, co-captain of the Selah Vikings football team!)

“Have you considered the feasibility of taking a dedicated predator hunting trip? Especially focusing on cougars? Think it wouldn’t be worth it? Let me give out an early Christmas Present here… I want to up your odds!”

Apologies for the skippy audio, not sure what the dealio is with it.

Ill be getting serious on the lion hunting come tuesday, steve. Conditions will be okay, but not ideal.

Spent some time deer hunting, looking at young deer, mostly counting lion and wolf tracks. Found a big set of tom tracks, and a scrape. Just got my new lion hunting weapon set up and dialed. 16" barrel .243 with a suppressor, cerakote, and 1-6 scope. Should do the job just fine if im fortunate enough to call one in.

Alarm set for 0430. Just going up the road a few miles to my starting point. Im feeling way more excited to get lion hunting than i was to go out deer hunting. Already have my day, my rough calling locations, planned out for tomorrow. Subject to change of course. May end the day on the opposite side of the mountains from my truck, but my parents live on that side, so i can just call the dad taxi to get picked up and driven around to my truck.

No luck on the lion hunting yet but i did jump a nice bull elk out of his bed today. That alone wouldnt be too special but this happened on a local mountain that has been my core stomping grounds for over a decade, and ive never once seen an elk there, nor got one on cam. Just a couple rare instances of finding elk crap or tracks over the years. Total fluke occurence, but it made my day.

Re: Lion Story

Postby wawhitey » 11 25, 2022 •  [Post 31]

Going to hunt cats somewhere different tomorrow. A local place ive never given proper attention to during lion season. But on paper, its ideal. Lower slope of a mountain. Plenty of elk, whitetail, mules using the area, and for some unfathomable reason, not very heavy wolf activity. So everything a lion wants, nothing it doesnt. And a dnr guy sent me pins of several big piles of lion crap he found on the ridge above.
Going to make a long day of it, see what happens. Worst case scenario i burn off some thanksgiving calories.
Just trying to think where would i be hunting if i were a lion. Id be hunting where prey is abundant, competition is scarce, and snow level is manageable. Thats this place. Cant get a lion unless youre hunting where theyre hunting i guess.
Going to go in light. Light clothes, light on gear, small daypack, so i dont get worn down just covering miles between stand locations. If i get lucky and fill my tag, ill hang the meat in trees, and carry the hide / skull out to satisfy legal requirements, and go back in for the meat the following day. Plenty cold out for that. Main thing is i want to feel light on my feet slogging through the snow all day. Pretty common that ill cover several miles without finding a spot to call that feels right. Being weighed down with a buncha heavy clothing and a large pack just results in my calling less.

It does feel good going in light and covering ground. I run a pretty light pack usually, but drink a ton of water. Water is always my heaviest contribution. If I know there's water around I just bring a filter now.

You use a water filter in freezing weather? Always felt like it would get damaged when residual moisture inside freezes and expands. Good water filters arent cheap. But when its not winter time, i always have one. Its a life saver hunting in 100 degree august heat.

I guess it depends how cold it is. I have done a fair number of spike camps on cold cold weather without problem. I do tey my best to keep it from freezing solid.

This year I picked up a steripen. If the water you're getting is generally clear and free of debris, it works great. I hardly filtered this year in most of my wanderings, just sterilized.

Curious how things looked in the spot with fewer Wolves... Might be something to specifically watch over the next couple years.

Really glad you're getting out after them!

Cool seeing the elk in a new spot too, that might be a sign of things to come too. Migrating due to predation... Things are adjusting...

Just Posted O39 on the cougar Call In Story page.

Nerves of steel, man!

Also seeing a few stories on the forums from this year! Way to get out there and get 'em! I'd love to get the stories on the site, if you're willing, please reach out to me and I'll get it posted!

FYI:

ComplEEEEEEETTTly built a new website today. (Yeesh, how do them nerds do it all day every day?!?!)

Same URL, although the www isn't necessary anymore.

rain-shadow.com

Simple.

GoDaddy couldn't handle a 16 file download purchase, or over 200,000 keystrokes on one page, so a couple things had to change...

The Cougar Calling Package is now in three parts, but it's an e-commerce site and it's supposed to download purchases automatically, so it's easy and simple... hopefully!

The Call-In Story Pages are linked from the home page, and easy, and now divided into sections, so it's actually a little easier to find stuff... but the old direct link doesn't work!

So, the Direct LinkS to the Calling Stories are:

https://rain-shadow.com/cougar-calling-stories-1

https://rain-shadow.com/cougar-calling-stories-2

When I add (YOUR) story, I'll direct the post to the page in question, the pages link to each other and to home so it's all at the click or tap.

Speaking of Tap, it's supposed to work WAYYYY better on phones and tablets now...

I'm going to be adding and tweaking for a decade or so, but check it out and see what you think!

Just posted story number RS24... Dave, in South Dakota got another one! His 4th!

Of course, he called cold (which I advise not to do unless you're out of options) on a spot that worked in the past (which I advise is a bad way to pick a stand location) and just WORKED one right in!

Once you say one thing, another thing works!

Just posted RS25...

On this page: https://rain-shadow.com/cougar-calling-stories-1

This one just happened!

It's a long story, but Jeff did a very good job writing it up and it really shows the use of the networked trail camera in real time, so I wanted to leave the whole thing there. Wish I could post pics in with the story on my new website, but these pages are getting so huge that the site can't handle it.

It's Call-in Story Page 1, about 1/3 of the way down. Look for RS25. Another BIG BIG Tom for Jeff!

Cant wait to get out hunting cats this fall. Probably wont be home until about the end of rifle elk im guessing. So just have lion hunting to sit and think about while im on the boat. Sitting looking over onx making plans, figuring out efficient routes to get a few good stands in per day. Been turning circles in icy strait for almost a week now, waiting for a weather window to cross the gulf. Gives a guy a lot of time to plan his fall hunting. Hoping for a bit of snow as soon as i get back.

Hey, I had an idea…

I was adding to the Cougar Call-In Story pageS on my website, and I thought, “This is getting really huge! It’s kinda tedious. Easy to lose your place. People don’t read like the old days…” and several other thoughts along those lines….

Then I though of the soundbited lives we’re living these days, and I came up with a plan!

Cougar Call-In Story VIDEOS!

I’ve done a couple, and I’ll link one here as a sample of what I’m talking about.

https://youtu.be/be6Y-Ye8r8s?si=0k0bqpvk1NIi9OwZ

I’ll start building the page and post my old videos to get it rolling.

I was wondering if any of you guys with stories on the pages were willing,

Or any of you guys with stories I don’t have yet,

Can you interview yourselves on video, and send them to me to organize edit and post?

The way I did the one posted here is fun, going back to the exact spot, running a stand, then reminiscing the story to your camera.

But in the woods, in the landscaping, the porch, the armchair, doesn’t matter!

I’d like to get video interviews of your stories.

Please let me know if you can do a story video.

I’ll have to find out about copyright and stuff, but I will look into that. (For now just include a note in the email or a clip of video giving me permission to post it.)

I think it’d be a lot more likely that people would hear your story if they could watch it instead of reading through (literally well over 200,000 words of) written stories!

Please think about a contribution!

Be a youtube celebrity!

Well steve, i filled my washington tag yesterday but cant give you a story for your website. Just dumb luck. Stayed home yesterday because it was a rainy mess, saw a couple spooked deer go through my yard from the timber company land next door and thought, i bet theres a cougar over there. Maybe 5 or 10 minutes later this cat came fast walking through the timber i thinned out behind my house, about 60 yards away, like it was trying to catch up to the deer. I jumped up and grabbed my 223 off the chair and flung my window open and whistled to stop her and shot as quick as i could. Wasnt even hunting, just sitting on my ass at home. Ill be heading to idaho to hunt cats and wolves after late rifle deer is over, if im real lucky maybe ill have a good story for you from idaho.
It looked a little smaller than the 2 females ive called in so i assumed t was borderline juvenile, barely away from mom. Didnt even look at the teeth. The biologist that sealed it today was looking at the teeth and said no, definitely full adult, should be at least 3 years. My taxidermist said the same.

Thats still a great "story"

While not a lion story my brother told me he would be in late for work. H wanted to shoot a goose, while sitting in the front porch with his coffee,,,, took three days.
A buddy shot his first deer from his bedroom window!

Shooting things from my house isnt something i try to do, i enjoy being out in the woods, actually hunting. But sometimes, it happens. In 2018, after something like 42 days in stand that year for a specific buck, i gave up early on the last day and drove home. Was unloading all my gear with maybe an hour of daylight left, and as i was carrying my bow through the house i looked out my window and saw a small basket rack 8pt buck in my back yard. Didnt kill anything else that year, so damned if i wasnt going to get some venison. Opened the window and put an arrow in him.
2020, dec 1st, after totalling my truck and being basically stuck at home, unable to go hunt, decent 9pt came into my yard. Once again, arrow out the window.
2020, dec 25th, sitting in my pajamas christmas morning, see a bobcat chewing on that deers ribcage. Couldnt help myself.
This year, rainy nasty day, sitting home on my birthday, lion shows up. Im taking my birthday cougar.
Also several yotes have been shot from inside my house. Ill take a yote anytime, any way i can get it.

Dude... I agree... that's still a good story!

Might be a good one to interview yourself on video for me! (I'm going to really try to build up the video story page. It's the wave of the future you know, to have people read to you, instead of reading for yourself!) The story pages are getting REALLY long, it'll be a good alternative option to hear stories.

PSA: If anybody has any trouble opening the website to read the new stories, you might have to go to your browser settings and find and old cookie associated with rain-shadow.com and delete it. It was somehow tied to another domain that I let expire. I don't get it, but I know it works if you are getting an expired domain message. rain-shadow.com is still live, just need to clear out the old cobwebs!

Thanks!

I've had quite a few people ask me if I have a Heat sound.

I do now.

I didn't for a long time, because my theory (which I still stand by) is that you draw all Cats with mellow communicative sounds, and you only draw specific Cats with aggressive sounds.

Heat is fairly aggressive.

But as I learn from my own collection of cougar calling stories, Heat can and will call more than just Big Toms. It seems to call others in a territorial response, but other cats are territorial too. So there is more than just that ONE application of a heat sound.

So, thanks to the great trail camera audio captures from Rodney in the South Lake Roosevelt region, now RainShadow has a Heat sequence.

I added it to the Vocals package, but for those of you who already have my vocal sequences, I added it as a stand-alone download (for me it's on page 3 of the e-store, phone and computer) between AFC and MR on the Products page.

Bidenomics notwithstanding, I haven't increased any prices.
