2021 Meat Pole

Postby wawhitey » 03 05, 2021 •  [Post 1]

Okay, first on the board this year. What shall it be, stew? Burgers?

This is the place to share your pictures (and brief story if you wish) of your 2021 Big (or small) Game harvests. Whether they're taken with bow, rifle, muzzle loader, shotgun, hand cannon, spear, or the Five Point Exploding Heart Technique, let's see your 2021 harvests!

The previous year meat poles are all located in the Archived Tips section if you wish to view them.

Excellent! What did you pop it with? I'm pretty sure it wasn't one of your thump gun/lever actions.

Not sure, but this one aint worth a dime. Just dont want em eating my fawn or the neighbors cat. Took it up to my taxidermists for some instruction in the trickier aspects of skinning and fleshing. Bad pelt = practice hide.

way to start it off!!

if money spent is any indication of critters i'll kill this year, it should be good  some people celebrate "spring cleaning" while i celebrate "spring gear testing"

actually waiting for my wife to get home to pitch a new trad bow.... i need to talk her into it before the UPS guy starts showing up next week, haha. been out calling a couple times, but just cold sets. have not lined up time and weather very good yet this year.

had one good hunt, got notified about a fresh llama kill and went to go hunt that cat the next morning, the county trapper told them he wouldn't be able to come out for a few days.... everything was good, i had a good setup, no dice.... i found out on my way home that i was hunting a dead cat. the trapper showed up before daylight unannounced and i was hunting a dead cat... oh well.

weather should be getting better, and though this spring will be a little chaotic in life, i'll still make time to hunt.

Billy can you give us the story. I had always thought of the Sonora since reading an article in an outddor magazine as a kid
Did you feel safe out there.? I had a student who offered me hunting and beach time,,,sometime when its safe. Grandmas sent the grandsons to the US because drug traffic on their ranch. Next winter Im hoping to spend a week or two after javilina east of Nagales, unless the border is a problem

Lefty,

short answer is.... yes I felt safe, but bear in mind I was pretty well escorted by the guide + crew the whole time.

the hunt was on a 25k acre ranch out in the desert. pretty desolate country. we flew into Hermosillo (capital of Sonora, MX) and drove ~3 hrs out to the Ranch. pretty much stayed there til hunt was over and we drove back to town.

the hunting wasnt "hard" by any means. I saw ALOT of quality bucks that week. we shot a total of 6 that week, and all were studs.

oddly enough.... down there the muleys live in the lowlands, and whitetail (Coues) live in the mountains. I never saw any coues cause we were in the low country. saw lots of muleys, coyotes, javelina and QUAIL EVERYWHERE.

Now this is a bear. Couldnt get a good pic to save my life, due to where he died, and not knowing what happened to my clip shot. Wish ida had it with me. Ordering a new one. He actually had ground growage when i walked up to him, bigger than i thought. That doesnt happen very often, especially with bears.
Couldnt hardly flop him around to cut him up. He was significantly bigger than me. Wish ida had a second set of hands, what a chore. Shot him at 10 yards, maybe a little less. Anyway heres 3 crappy pics.

I bugled this public land bull in on Sept 3. I was shooting my 54lb recurve and a 570 grain arrow, single bevel broadhead. 35-ish yard shot, complete pass through. I deboned him but the pack out was still pretty rugged. Two miles one way exactly. The flies were atrocious.

I was so concerned with the high temps and getting him out asap I spaced out taking any photos with my bow. You can see it though, barely, leaning on a deadfall tree in the upper right corner. This was the cleanest elk I have ever shot- he didn't smell at all.

The pics do not show how steep it is where he ended up. He had actually rolled downhill about 15 yards to rest against the log. Bad spot for sure.

Wednesday the 15th
The bull scared Andrew at 5 yards, the bull spooked as Andrew drew, My cow call stopped him, arrowed at 26 yards,

Not a drop of blood or scuff of dirt. Founds 375 yards and three hours later just after sunset,

ABout where Andrews elbow is on the opposite side.
The shot was high and back, liver. then forward, into the lungs .

Bleed internally. unti it hit the ground. with less than a cup of blood at the arrow hit and flothy mouth.

My 2021 elk. Went into a new drainage and did scouting on day 1 everything was silent. Day 2 early morning this guy was bugling his head off with a bunch of cows, was able hear his last round up bugle near their bedding. I crept up and gave a lost cow call..nothing moved up another 100 yards called again then he lit right up around the 80 yard mark just above me. We went back and forth a couple times then I decided to try to call his cows away..he didn't like that just came running in full steam. Had a broadside shot at 15 yards with my trusty 270. Solo pack out 800 yards straight up the bank. Fairly decent walking luckily, onto chasing big whitetails later in the season.

Nice bull. Looks big bodied too- my favorite kind of bull elk. Calling his cows away was a good move after what you tried first was not really working by itself but that still was a good choice though- a lost cow (in this case a cow trying to get away from the bull -you-) set the stage because you didn't insist on repeating the same thing over and over and that made a difference. Enough to get them curious, realistic because elk move on with what they are saying- then you became a bull getting greedy. Nice sequence.

Jhg wrote:Nice bull.

Good advice thanks guys. The call used was the 2 mews and round up bugle which I learnt from Paul in one of his videos. Also slow played a bull yesterday took 30 mins of calling them he lit up next to us across a creek. He wouldn't come across mainly because the herd had just come from there is what I think. A tighter setup next time is the lesson there. We were at around the 230 yard mark too far for best odds.

Shot September 7th at 40 yards. The cow traveled 40 yards after being shot. I think I told RJ it was 30-30, but that was a mistake.

Not sure I have seen a picture of Swede before. Given his internet persona, I thought he was 6'4" with 6-pack abs and bulging biceps! Seeing you harvest an elk makes me proud that you have been paying attention to my teachings!

Nicely done Swede! Congrats are definitely in order!

My son got his first elk after 3 years of trying, and it was a stud of a 5x5. I'm tickled for the following reasons:

1. he was hunting solo (started doing this last year)
2. after deciding that the field he selected to hunt was a good place to hunt, he stood next to one tree all day long, from ~6:30 am til 6:30pm when the bull came in and got shot (patience)
3. good first shot, but bull didn't flop, so he shot it 2 more times, connecting all 3 in the vitals (kept his head in the game)
4. thanked God for the opportunity, and me for the training (humble/thankful).

Attaboy, son.

and not to be outdone.......

My friend Erik has hunted elk with me since we started (2008). His son Matt and Travis (my boy) are best friends. the two of them have hunted at least as hard as their dads have on 3 trips (2018, 2020, 2021).

Matt got his first bull, also a 5x5 on the same trip. I was lucky to have heard both of them on the radio calling out "I JUST SHOT A BULL".

Matt was also hunting solo, and is going to be a great man someday. He turned 18 on the trip.

Both young men will miss the next 4 elk seasons to college, but I'm sure looking forward to their young legs joining us again in 2026, Godwilling.

They are transitioning from mentee's to peers. Our work as dads is nearing completion.

Re: 2021 Meat Pole

Postby 7mmfan » 11 09, 2021 •  [Post 64]

I have a good buddy who lives in Eastern WA. He is an accomplished hunter, with many bucks and bulls under his belt. We have bird hunted together many times, but never have hunted deer. He was going to be in Western WA for the last weekend of general deer season visiting his wife's family, so he asked if I'd be willing to take him Blacktail hunting for a day. He had never hunted Blacktail before and was interested in trying it out. I was itching to get into the BT woods again, so I agreed without reservation.

5:00 am Halloween morning we met and headed up to the gate I wanted to hunt. It's about a 3 mile hike steep uphill to get to where the good clearcuts start. From there there are several cuts of varying age with good topography in about a 2 square mile area. The weather was less than ideal. Clear and calm. There were no expectations for the day other than spending it in the woods hunting.

We made it to the edge of the first clear cut about 10 minutes before first light, so we hung back in the woods for a few minutes, changed our clothes and joked around about how there was going to be a big buck standing down in the clear cut when we walked out. We decided there was enough light to see so we slowly crunched our way out to the edge of the landing on the frozen ground, glassing all the nooks and crannies as the clear cut unfolded below us. 1 minute in, as we both stepped forward far enough to see the bottom timberline 200 yards away, we both said "BUCK" at the same time. Clearly both our eyes were on the same page and landed on the most likely spot for a deer to be at the same moment. 200 yards below us was a huge bodied buck with obvious antlers slowly walking down the skid trail at the bottom of the clear cut, nose to the ground. Josh is a confident shooter, but I could tell he was excited. I had shooting sticks in hand, so I quickly adjusted them to height for him, he got steady and seconds later, BOOM! WHOP! A solid hit. The deer turned and ran down the trail with his nose in the dirt for about 40 yards. I was congratulating Josh on an excellent shot when suddenly the buck got his legs under him again and started heading for the tree line. Josh was on it, and fired a follow up shot. BOOM! WHOP! Another solid hit. The buck turned and ran back the way he'd just come before tipping over at almost the exact point of the initial shot.

We both stared at each other in the dim morning twilight, with the smell of gun powder hanging in the air and began laughing. I just joked and said, " See I told you, thats how Blacktail hunting is done! You just walked up to the first landing and kill a buck." We navigated down to the buck and when we got there we were surprised to find a very old huge bodied 2 pt. When I first saw the size of the body I assumed he would have more headgear, but I believe this old timer was regressing. His teeth were worn to the gum line and he was missing a couple of front teeth. He was clearly passed his prime. It didn't seem to be slowing him down though, he was full blast rutted up. His neck was swollen and he had just made a scrape and peed all over his legs. I found the rub line that he had been working on down that tree line. He was definitely a contender.

We broke down his buck in the shade of the tree line as the sun came up and began to warm the landscape. I had a small thermos of coffee in my pack, so when were done and packs were loaded we enjoyed a snack and hot coffee, then proceeded to do the 3 miles walk back to the rig, all downhill. What a day.

I have actually taken a photography class and typed up some how-to's like you did a while back on grip[ and grin photography. Mine were angled towards fish pictures in catch and release fisheries for salmon and steelhead. I'll see if I can find that and share it. In a past career as a fishing guide, I took thousands upon thousands of grip and grin fish pictures.

Shooting a recurve is something I'd like to do. I just wish we had enough game around here to make hunting them with traditional gear a real option. I mean, an option where you could have a real chance at killing one on a somewhat regular basis. I actually think that you would have a much better chance of killing bears with consistency here than deer or elk.

7mm, you gotta go for it man! With good coaching (i.e. Solid Archery Mechanics), and great form, you can get confident shooting 30 yards at animals with a recurve.

When I hunt alpine bears in september, it's fairly easy to get close to them as long as you have good wind. Maybe I'll give it a go one of these years.

If you get a recurve or longbow, and want to take a bear with it, ill show you a spot you could get it done. As long as you keep your damn mouth shut about it. Nice quiet trail lined with berries, tip toe up the way and bears all over. Was thinking of going for my first archery bear there next august. But its not that important to me. I almost guarantee if you spent 4 or 5 days tiptoeing up and down the first mile of trail you could have a halfway decent bear in recurve range, oblivious to your presence.
