Quarantine Gear Projects

Postby Rangerz » 03 21, 2020 •  [Post 1]

Building a new set of arrows (black eagle carnivore with 125 grain slick tricks), new string on the bow, going thru gear and staring at Google earth till by eyes are blurry!

Curious about how everyone else is handling the quarantine.

I have been working in my yard some, and looking at G.E. too. My son and I have found hundreds of elk on G.E. in our hunting area. I just wish they wouid remain there until this next hunting season.

I think im going to put my idaho wolf / lion hunt on hold for a while, things are getting weird. Just going to hang around home for the time being.
I have a whole pile of new gun parts and tools, ready to build a new ar in .223 wylde, that should keep me occupied for a while, since i have no clue what im doing.

Also have a new bolt action rifle sitting here that i need to clean up, mount a scope, shoot a bunch of different ammo through to see what it likes, and get the scope dialed in.

Going to mount a reflex sight on my .444 also. And have a .450 bushmaster upper on the way, and ill be mounting a reflex sight on that too, and getting it dialed in. So i guess i wont get bored any time soon hanging out here at my cougar farm.

Also, the whistle pigs are coming out now, and ive got about 6k rounds of .22wmr ammo to terrorize them with.

I’m bummed.... I’ve already invested in a bunch of updated gear for this year so I don’t have much to keep me occupied. I guess that’s not so bad because money is better spent on bills and necessities right now.

I’ve been working lots of hours this year so I am glad to be able to sit down and concentrate on the hunt plans for my clients. A 2 week quarantine would be a big help with that! Lol

That means lots of staring at maps and onX satellite imagery which I enjoy. It’s almost hunting. Glad to have elk, deer, and walleye in the freezer right now.

Well, found out im missing a tool to build my upper, so thats on hold. And didnt realize id need anti seize to finish my lower, so i finished that but didnt loctite anything, need to disassemble and redo the last few parts. So im currently in purgatory on my ar build, waiting for head space gauging tools and anti seize.
Got my reflex sight mounted properly on my .444, still need to zero it. Still waiting on my .450 bushmaster upper. Aside from unforseen delays i really need to slow down or im going to end up doing yardwork.

Also got the new 223 bolt gun scrubbed out, and rail removed, talley rings mounted. Need to take it down into the dungeon, put it on the work bench and break out the leveling kit to get the scope mounted properly.

So what are you using the 458 socom for? Type of game / shot range / hunting method?

Why the 458 socom over the 450 bushmaster?

Im new to ars, and was looking at both, and it seemed they were both more than adequate for what i wanted, a close range black bear calling caliber. So it seemed to me that 450bm had more factory ammo available, and i dont handload, so i went with a 450bm upper (that should have arrived weeks ago  )

Just curious what your intended use of it is, and why you decided on the socom instead of the bm, being as how i have zero experience with either.

First I dont feel sorry for a single guy being too busy,.. I had some experience the same way in my late 20's. Never home, worked when I worked, and played hard

That's still going to take time.Im not even getting my wifes list done The oldest wants to stucco her house, Middle daughter bought a tub at the RMEF so a complete bath remodel. The youngest wants a do-da garage for now that could be an easy conversion to a house.
But Im going bear hunting :D

Also not hunting related, but needed to be done and have the time do it. Had 10 yards of black mulch delivered to my house before our state went into lockdown. Spent the last 2 days moving most of it into my back yard flower gardens. From the pile in the street to the back corner of the back yard is 101 yards. I did this in one form or another about 80 times with a wheelbarrow full of mulch. 30' of elevation gain each time. Do that math and don't forget the return trip!

I built it for bear over bait and deer hunting in Indiana. Also the occasional run a way Buick.
I do reload so the bullet selection is better. The BM uses a .452, the SOCOM a .458. For some reason, most comparisons are done with a 250 in the BM and a 300 in the SOCOM which gives the advantage to the BM. With similar weights, there is a slight advantage to the SOCOM because of better bullet BC.
They both recoil like a 20ga slug gun, so be ready. You may have to change out your buffer spring to get the rifle to cycle properly.
I built me first 3 M4s, 16 years ago. Gave one to my son and one to my bonus son. After a stint in the NG, my son became obsessed with them. I’d hated to say how many he has. He still builds and works on them for people around. All that to say, if you have problems or questions, let me know and I’ll get you in touch with him.
Have fun with your new upper.

The trees are a never ending source of excessive unwanted fuel. I could spend the next 2 weeks running a chainsaw and dragging crap around, but im not going to.

Your dog looks like hes seen some s*** in his time :D

My parents have an old black lab thats supposed to be a shed dog but her hips are garbage. Damn she loves antlers though. Im heading over there tomorrow to do some gun stuff, and ive got a couple whitetail sheds and a moose shed in my truck for the old dog to chew on, itll make her day.

I’m a yard/ground work slut, just ask my wife, she’ll tell you. The idea of having weeks of saw and burn time in front of me is appealing. Maybe if it was a reality it wouldn’t be so appealing.

Chloe is a seasoned veteran for sure. She has seen some s#!£. Mostly bulls#!£ provided by me. But she’s hunted ducks in sub zero temps, retrieved roosters in blizzards and fought off raccoons and stood down one black bear sow in her 11 years. She’s been forced into a retirement of fires, balls, and table scraps the last couple years. Mostly my fault, as a kiddo wreaked havoc on her conditioning time. I hope to get her out for a couple easy duck trips this coming winter. She’s an accomplished shed hound as well. I’ll try to find the photos tonight or tomorrow.

Finally got this .223 wylde build done. Kinda. The high scope rings arent quite high enough for a quick natural cheek weld, and ive maxed out how far forward i can slide the scope with traditional rings, and id like it a bit further forward, so i ordered a proper mount for the gun. In the mean time though the scope is leveled, torqued to spec, bore sighted, and i put it on paper 1.5"low at 20 yards, but im waiting for the better mount before i go any further with zeroing and experimenting with different ammo. Pretty damn sweet gun though! I think she'll be hell on coyotes! And now im REALLY looking forward to my 5.56 suppressor getting out of jail!

With the help of the tractor: paint; moved just a bit for backing. I think Ive made the target 10 years back the year I decided to start archery hunting, added some height about 5 years back
Winter was tough on the targets posture.
Some carpets were shot out and crumbled when I pulled them out, The target is a bit shorter and not as tight, Hope we can get 4 more years out of it

Picked last fall then frozen in the freezer gallon zip locks. They keep surprisingly well frozen till we make time to thaw them and get to work canning. The jam anyways comes out great.

I'm going to be canning a bunch of tuna, as well as some elk meat in the next couple weeks. Never done red meat before, but we've been pressure cooking a lot of meat lately and love it. Hoping the canning process will just make those meals quicker and easier.

I think once you can some elk it will be a standard go to thing. Really good, and real convenient. Also long shelf life, and if you lose power or your freezer takes a crap on you or something, all those jars of meat in the cupboard will still be good to go

You have a nice looking rifle Elkhntr08. Was the camo your own pattern your own design? I did a 308W stock a few years ago, but it was Krylon Camouflage ultra flat paint in non-reflective green. I liked it, but would have preferred to do a good camo pattern.

It was a flat black stock. Then 2 coats of Granite creations grey, hit it with Krylon marbling webs then 5 coats of clear. Dressed it right up I think. Now get some 7mm mags loaded for it. Gave $395 for the rifle so it’s a cheap project.
Now working on the Rem 700 that had the melted stock. Ready to DuraCoat it as soon as I get a nice day.
