Just be glad it's not a big diesel. That Tacoma should pull out easy. Diesels buried in the front end, come out hard. Don't ask me how I know. Great idea to have a receiver hitch front and back with winch wiring along with each and a winch fitted to a receiver so you can pull front or back

The times are long gone when you could get your hi-lift jack out, jack up the corners of the truck, and fill in the dug out holes with rock or ???

Well, my help got stuck. Manahed to get them unstuck eventually, but they couldnt get close enough and had to bail. Now of course, thunder lightning and rain. So im making myself comfortable for the night. Luckily i always go prepared for some impromptu truck camping. So now im enjoying a fire in the rain, and getting a paleo meal heated up. Also, lucky me, i have 4g signal and a bottle of bourbon. Gotta look on the bright side right?

Nope, nobody can get to me. The old mans gonna come up with shovels, pickaxes, comealong, boards, etc etc in the a.m., see what we can do. This is very much not good. I need to have my head examined trying to drive up here this time of year.

I know what you need this fine (although unplanned) evening in the mountains. A Patrick McManus book of short stories to pass the time! I’ll see if I can get a hawk to carry one your way in the next few hours.

Ah! I have a new book in my truck, i forgot! Thanks for the reminder. Like i said, im always prepared. Got a good book to read, about 5 gallons of water, enough food to outlast my water easily. And a book. The only thing that worries me is the half 5th of bourbon and half a can of chew....

Ah let them join you for the camp out. We were coming from Nevada last fall and snow storm hit, couldn't see the white line from the passenger seat. I told the wife we have the horse trailer with a mattress and sleeping bags in the tack room. mountain houses, water and whiskey. Great night of impromptu camping.

True that! We got my brother in laws pickup burried out in a pivot track, after chaining up to no avail. We had to walk back to his house and get the tractor. It was 10 below, but ground was insulated by snow.

He had the same last year, and got his tractor stuck too....ouch!

Congratulations Five Stars!!!
I feel better knowing I'm in such good company.

Now you can buy those fancy plastic traction pads. Hmm my birthdays coming up https://www.extremeterrain.com/tred-800-military-green-recovery-and-extraction-device-8717.html?utm_content=XT%20Winches%20-%20Accessories%7CTRED&utm_source=google-pla&utm_medium=shopping&T5_Var2=shopping&T5_Var3=yellow&T5_Var4=J104913&intl=0&utm_campaign=XTW+Wrangler+Vehicle+Medium&gclid=CMmW6PL889oCFWOJxQIdF8EFPQ&gclsrc=ds
Five or six of theses a Highlift , shovel and a few hours and you would have been home with a muddy truck and sore back :o

Im an expert at very similar situations,..I have a well rounded experiences. .
I can proudly say I have never needed outside vehicle and people help. except the time my dad came out with a school bus to pull my 63 ford Gallaxie 500 out of a muskrat slough.

My last little situation. Thursday morning before first light.
Put everything back in the bed of the pickup, put the truck in gear and the tires spun,.. during the night the pickup sunk and I was high centered on a dandy of a rock,..I carried rock ,stone and firewood ab built a nice little two track off that rock,

The past few years Ive been turning around sooner,.. but a good shovel, pieces of engineered lumber, a floor jack ( new trucks and a Hi lift jacks combos get expensive  ) I have carried pickupbed liners and a sheets of plywood for over 40 years. Now you can buy those fancy plastic traction pads. Hmm my birthdays coming up https://www.extremeterrain.com/tred-800-military-green-recovery-and-extraction-device-8717.html?utm_content=XT%20Winches%20-%20Accessories%7CTRED&utm_source=google-pla&utm_medium=shopping&T5_Var2=shopping&T5_Var3=yellow&T5_Var4=J104913&intl=0&utm_campaign=XTW+Wrangler+Vehicle+Medium&gclid=CMmW6PL889oCFWOJxQIdF8EFPQ&gclsrc=ds

Last year I got these boys out once,.. but they wouldnt listen,.. they entertained me and the dog for a couple days. Maybe I posted that story

In other news, on this day in 2048, a modern day mountain man was discovered in a high, remote area a bit south of the Washington/Canadian border. It seems that he had buried his truck 30 years earlier and after several failed attempts to "unstick" the truck, decided to just stay up high, away from civilization and live off the land. This is a first hand rendering/drawing of "old Zeke" as he has became known to some who claims to have seem him. Some have claimed to have seen Zeke riding the high ridges on a bull moose........

Glad you made it out! Looks like some nasty roads, dirt will keep falling out of the bottom of your pickup for about 9 months now :D

Looks like it was quite the ordeal.

Good excuse for a winch

The same bro in law I mentioned above got the same Chevy stuck last winter, those dirt 2 tracks through sage and pivots right after the snow melted off, they went and got the tractor and buried it too, they had to use a big tractor the next day, they were all suffering from headaches due to the activities the night before.

In October we almost got it bad in my 07 TRD, got lucky to get out of there, but it took a good while. Would have been a 15 or 20 mile hike out. Same thing, desert 2 tracks right after some snow. I had a winch on that one, but sage was the biggest winch anchor around.

No winch on the new one. You folks have a good taste in pickups

Decided to drive through town on my way home, hit the car wash. Spent a good deal of time crawling under my truck blasting everything with the pressure washer. Came out soaking wet and covered in mud, but it needed to be done.

I remember well getting stuck a couple of times when I lived and worked out of Twisp. That soil and the roads they go over look perfectly fine until all of a sudden the bottom falls out from under your truck. Anyway I am glad you are back with your deer and turkeys on the homestead.

This was the first brand new vehicle i ever bought, and damn its been good to me. No problems at all. Thought id have it until i was 50. They dont make em like this anymore. The new yotas all suck compared to my 2011. Nobody makes a current production model truck that meets my criteria. Im going to have to settle for a lesser rig now. Crappy motor, auto tranny etc. I got one of the last of the good ones, and rolled it like an idiot.

I have no idea how Whitey had his accident, and am totally saddened that it occurred. But to anyone interested, it has been my observation that those $1500 drug dealer tires like he has on his truck are very poor on ice and snow. He is not the first to have that experience.

You can be bummed over your truck or you can be really thankful you didn't get hurt. Focus on the latter.

As for the truck, there will be new features in your new truck that you will come to really love. There isn't a truck in my past that is better than the truck I have now.

No offence. That is just the term I use to define oversized off highway tires. Maybe they just look supersized. I used to see guys driving around the forest with a couple of guns on a gunrack and the tires that went well beyond the tire well. The truck often, but not always had to have a lift kit installed just so you could turn the machine around.

No lift, no level, not oversized tires at all. Think thry just look big cause the weight of the truck isnt on em. When you say drug dealer tires im thinking the low pro stupid things guys put on oversized wheels

No. Just look at the tires on Lefty's truck. Those are drug dealer tires on steroids. :D

Low profile tires. These are drug dealer tires. Leftys tires are keystone drinker tires. My tires are a functional happy medium ;)

Actually it was during the early 70s. That was when my next door neighbor got a new Chevy Blazer and put oversized tires on it. They were nothing the size of Lefty's, but were much larger than stock. During its first winter he lost control and rolled his Blazer on a snowy road.
During those years we referred to them as "drug dealer tires". The Forest Service timber crew would see young men out mid day apparently hunting after the season with a fancy truck outfitted with their big tires. They were too expensive to be common tires in those days so they caught our attention. I did not invent the term. It has been around since long before the low profile tires showed up with the advent of large disk brakes.
The oversized tires were advertised for sand and desert if my memory has not gone south on me. If you had Mickey Thompsons you were doing very well. That was just after the civil war I guess.

Speaking of poachers: In my short life here on planet earth circling the sun, I have known and run into at least a few poachers. I have also found the remains of poached critters. To me there are three types of poacher. There is the survivalist, who is poor, and supplements his small income providing game meat killed as needed. There is the poacher that markets game meat. And there is the recreation poacher that just likes to go out and kill something, or to have something to display later when he can claim it was taken last season. The recreation poacher kills and wastes.
I would never turn in a survivalist. You never mistook the the guys with the drug dealer tires for this type of poacher. Anyway that was for me the origin of the term "drug dealer tires". I have not kept up with what is fashionable with todays drug dealer, and since we did not copyright the expression "drug dealer tire", people are free to use it as it suits them. :D

D

We dont see eye eye on that one, Im sure they existed 70, 80 years ago.
I have never seen a true survivalist poacher. It is just an excuse for a lazy slob or meth cooker to kill out of season. They have been offed bumn calves and lambs and jobs, They dont have a job because of their addictions, they dont have money because of their addictions,
They are the same people who dont plant and harvest a garden, they buy beer and drugs and send their kids to school hungry . I was the teacher of a lot of "those people"
Plenty of people who give away their game if they wanted meat

Back to the yoda with big tires Its just an expensive toy, it isnt road legal, top speed with those tires and drive train, top end is about 20 mph With the much small 38" tire and drive train its street legal but you cant hang on at speeds over 40

The tires can run on 0 PSI

Lefty wrote:I have never seen a true survivalist poacher.

Well I have. We had a name for them. They were called west side loggers. For them the woods shut down soon after Thanksgiving and they were laid off until the snow left the mountains. You can't cut timber on steep hillsides in three feet of snow. You can't fall ahead as the snow buries too may logs, and you can't hang blocks and string out lines in those situations. The "gypo" (a common logger term that was not offensive) that owned the equipment took his equipment in and serviced it during the winter, and got it ready for the Spring. The loggers were unemployed. They supplemented their unemployment checks with venison. My guess would be that most did. Most of the loggers that worked the Cascades have moved on. Their way of life is gone. It is interesting that since the logger have left, so have the deer and elk. The deer and elk depended on the new browse afforded by the clear-cuts.
Those loggers were too proud to accept welfare, and they would not beg. Most would not try to get a town job. They waited for the woods to reopen in the Spring. Dad went to Seattle every winter and worked as a pile driverman. That meant he had to rent a second place and maintain a second home. It beat unemployment, but not by a lot.
Logger's wives were stay at home moms. The loggers wages were $3,25-$4.00 when I worked at it in 1968. It was darn hard even then to pay for an acre and a house, pay for a car and feed a family on $3.75 even then.
As for your meth users, I know of none that go out and poach. That said, I know only a very few. As for all of those people that would give you something if you needed it, I never saw them either. When dad was nearly killed when he was hit by a tree, and laid off for a full year; there was not a soul that came around and offered us a dime. Dad borrowed from the bank to keep groceries on the table, or bought on credit. Like I said above, he was too proud to beg. He paid back everything in a year, and we just continued to survive. When I went into the Navy, I always sent back at least half of my meager income to help out. You bet, I knew people that poached to survive.

Lefty, Thanks. Surely life experiences make us. I am as proud as anyone, and maybe more than I should be about my early years. Now I am filled with joy knowing that I have a Savior in Jesus Christ. He has made a huge difference in me. I could write a lot of sad stories, but that is not what I am about. I just wanted you to know that you have to get very close to people to know what is really going on in their life.
I know that Portland is filled with homeless people. They are considered bums and addicts. Most have severe mental issues. The sad thing is that there is no one that has a good solution. These people defy a good solution. They live in a world of broken people. We do not have the money or resources to fix them, or properly care for them. Many people despise them and some would like to use violence to rid the city of their presence, but they would just move and start over.

I worked with ED students at the State hospital. Believe it or not the money and resources are there,.. but those in need, need to accept help. Many are adult runaways. And they run from help too.
Pocatello has a number of places with beds available for homeless. Homeless men will eat than leave and spend the night in the cold because they wont stay sober enough to come in. Their addiction controls them
The greatest consideration People cant be fixed unless they want to be fixed.

Sorry WA Do you have a new truck yet? post a pic,.. with new rims and tires 8-)

Lefty, friend, you don't get it. You can feed and shelter some that live on the streets, but many are missed. Some are turned away. But you are not fixing the mentally ill or the addicted, and there are not enough homes to shelter them all. What to do has been hotly debated in Portland for years. But that is really what the issue is. They are not the survivalist poachers.
Also a family is not going to pack up and leave the home they have been paying for for years; leave their possessions including their automobile, and move together into a shelter with addicts, the mentally ill, the sick lame and lazy just to get three hots and a cot even if it is theoretically available. You are only placating your conscience offering that as an alternative, but that again that is not the issue with poachers.
I try to be scrupulous in my dealings as a testimony to my faith in Christ Jesus. This includes my hunting activity, but I would poach before I would walk away from home and family just for some free shelter meals. Our church recognizes the need of many living on the edge right in our area, which is away from the metropolitan area. We can't meet the need, but we try to make a small dent in it. Cooks, waitresses, store help, and many others are unemployed and living on the edge. They have to stretch every dollar they bring in, and may resort to stretching it farther than we are apt to do.
To my knowledge there is far more need than resources available to meet them.

Replaced the wiper motor in my dads old f350 today so its now usable. Hijacking it tomorrow until i buy a new truck, so ill now have a truck to use to get out hunting lions and setting bobcat traps. This rental car just aint cutting it. Too bad bob prices are tanked, i think the fuel economy in the old ford is measured in gpm, not mpg.

It sounds like your dad's truck has a 460 in it. They wouldn't be too bad if gas was $0.50 per gallon. The diesel isn't much better now with those high prices. I am looking forward to seeing what you decide on. I was thinking about getting rid of my ten year old Ford and getting something new with all of the bargains out there. It did not take long to convince me to keep what I have. I actually like the looks of the new, two door, Bronco that is coming out, but they are not a bargain either.

Yup, 460. Crew cab long bed. 1991 f350 with 111k on the odometer. Thats my hunting rig for the time being. Just going to skip deer this year and go straight to lions. Feels like the thing to do for some reason.

What are bods worth in your area.

What type of sets do you use?

I showed a good cat guy how to trap mink, he showed me cat trail sets for the West side. Those wet coyotes stink,

Swede Generally put: you cant help people who dont want help. Mentally ill/ Addicts want to get drunk and high and dont care where they sleep, And generally poachers dont live on the streets.and the addicts pawned their gun long ago

I wouldn't ever suggest a family move to a shelter with addicts

I agree Lefty. We are discussing two different types of people, and I do not condone poaching. I just have turned my back and failed to see it when the person was obviously very poor.
I will tell you of on such occasion: One afternoon in late August while on a fire patrol, I was driving down a gravel road when I saw some ravens close tot eh ground. I observed them for a minute and decided to investigate. Someone had killed a nice Blacktail buck and the head, and guts were left behind. It was in an area where active logging had been taking place, but the loggers were off that weekend day. After going back to my pickup, I drove down the road to a flat along a creek where the fire watch was camped. To my surprise he was a poor old man I knew personally. He lived three house up the road from where I was raised. I knew him to be a man that would poach a deer on occasion. He was well past his retirement years. His trailer was in poor condition and so was the old Chevy pickup. I asked how he was doing. As we talked, I noticed fresh blood streaked down the side of his pickup. After a couple more minutes of meaningless chat, where I intentionally never looked at that blood streak, We said good bye and I headed back to the ranger station. End of story.
I knew several poachers that lived where I grew up, but the most blatant was a man that would hang the deer up in his yard where anyone driving by could see it. He too was very poor. I saw one of his sons, who was in my class in school, pick food out of the waste garbage can, and eat it. What this man said was, if he was charged with poaching, he would just spend time in jail. He was not going to pay any fine, and the county could feed his family. He never was charged with anything I know of. I guess the sheriff's deputies and the game warden never saw anything either.

Thinking a 21 silverado trailboss custom will be coming home with me next week. Thought id get a tundra, but im just not seeing toyota offering a tundra that competes with options / price point. The trailboss is a pretty sweet rig, right up my alley. Was turned off of chevy originally as they all seemed like princess rigs more than hunting rigs, and pricey. But the trailboss custom cuts out a lot of the foofoo stuff, has a factory 2" lift, lt tires stock, extra skid plates, better shocks, auto locking rear diff, downhill assist, and is priced much lower. I dont need heated leather seats and all the funny luxury stuff, i need a hunting rig. I think this is what i want. If only you could get a manual transmission and a cd player still. I must be an old guy now or something, wanting obsolete stuff like that. Cds, what are those? Whats a clutch? Yeah. Damn.

My temporary rig. Cant drive it like the yota. Gotta say though, despite what it looks like, shes solid. 1991 with only 112k on the odometer. It basically gets fired up occasionally for a run to the dump or to haul wood or alfalfa. Just sits most of the time. Nothin a paint job wouldnt fix. Apparently there was a factory recall on these due to the peeling paint, but by the time the old man found out about that it was too late to take advantage of the recall for a free paintjob. Sound rig, but its like driving a boat while sitting on a couch. Not as nimble as the yota, not by a long shot. Ill have to be more cautious, use more consideration, deciding how deep ill drive this thing to hunt. Need a lot more room to get her turned around for one thing.

I really dont like automatics. I just dont. Ive owned a few over the years but i just like the control that comes with a manual. I guess it feels like youre actually involved with the driving proccess. Dont know quite how to explain myself. But i just dont like them. If a guy doesnt want to buy a 10+ year old truck though, auto it is. In the end, if im getting a new rig, i want it to be legitimately new, not something i have to wonder about the history of. Who had it before, how they mistreated it, when will it crap out on me somehow. Just dont trust used trucks any further than id trust a cocktail from bill cosby.

You’ll like your new Chev mister. It’s nice to be able to tow and haul things, and, have a smooth ride. I missed by 07 Tacoma for a bit, certainly it’s tight spot maneuverability. My 15 Silverado, Z71 Off Road package is a nice truck and does all I need it to do. Yep it has a CD player (killer sound system actually) and the foo foo heated seats, nice on the old bones on cold mornings :D.

I used to say the same thing about manuals; loved them! Now? You couldnt give me one. If I need that high rev performance, I push a button for Sport mode and it get it. Best of both worlds. Not sure if Chevy has the Sport mode though. And get the heated seats. Trust me. Get the heated seats!

Once you go to the full size rig, you'll wonder why you ever drove a smaller truck. The turning radius on the larger trucks does take a little getting used to, and more of the brushed in roads will scratch you than before, but the fuel economy is similar and the comfort level is way higher. I went from a 92 Toyota 4 banger to a Chevy Colorado, and shortly after went to an 08' Silverado. I've put almost 175,000 miles on that Silverado in 10 years. It has been a fantastic rig and taken me everywhere I'd like to go, and places that I probably shouldn't have.

If I was a car salesmen, I would steer you away from the Chevy and into a Ford. But I didn't even try to get you to move into a higher quality vehicle! :D

I just wanted you to experience the luxury of boufadora heaters after a cold hunt. You will be riding down some mountain this winter saying to yourself, "That Tigger, he really knows stuff! (Not a whole lot of it makes much sense, but he got the heated seats right!)".

I fully expected my insurance company to try to hose me on the value of my truck. Figured thats what insurance companies do. Afterall, theyre for-profit businesses, not humanitarian organizations. Was out tracking a big cat today when i got the word from them. No inclination to haggle, theyre offering me substantially more than i expected. Check is on the way. Should have a new rig early next week. Bought my truck brand new in 2011 for $30,500, and to be blunt it looked like a hunting rig by 2020. Some rough miles on it. And more than 9 years later and 138k on the odometer theyre cutting me a check for $21,000. These damn toyotas really hold their value. Was expecting a lowball appraisal but got a legitimate price compared to what ive seen for sale online. Pretty stoked. Kinda feel like a weight has been lifted now that this is done. As for the cat i was tracking, he refused to go anywhere that would be good to call, and i guess i was right on his tail because he pulled a weird manuever that makes me think he got hip to the jerk with a gun on his backtrail. Despite his well executed tactical evasive maneuver i managed to pick his trail up again and I kept on him until he dropped down onto the one single chunk of private land in that stretch of mountains. It was like he knew. So weird. Seemed completely intentional. I think critters have onx apps too. Followed that sucker for hours before being foiled by the dreaded invisible line that shall not be crossed.

Been trying and trying to get ahold of the truck i want. All dealerships in washington and idaho, even several in montana, no luck. Supply chains etc are screwed up due to the holocough. From time to time id find some listed only to be told theyre already sold. Even the "in transit" ones were sold before they arrived at the dealership. So a couple days ago i was ready to go spend like 10k more than i wanted, to buy a truck with a bunch of princess crap i dont need. Before i left the house i decided to recheck a handful of dealerships. Lo and behold my truck is "in transit" to a dealership in idaho and i made the call at 8am, put a deposit down. Everything now is done, just waiting for the thing to arrive so i can jam over there and get it. Whoda ever thought it would be so hard to get somebody to sell you a truck? Welcome to clown world. Honk, honk...

2021 silverado 1500 custom trailboss with the all important full bed. Could have had a short bed off any lot out there, theyre a dime a dozen, but full beds are not to be had. Maybe the brainiacs at general motors will realize the dealerships lots are overflowing with short beds while the full beds are being snatched up before they hit pavement, maybe they should make more full beds and less short beds? Supply and demand? Consumers clearly want the full bed. Read the writing on the wall.

You bet your ass i am. Thats why i needed the full bed. Going to go snug top this time, they seem wat better than the ARE canopy on my yota. I spend more nights sleeping in the bed of my truck each year than i spend sleeping in my house. If i was 5'5" tall i would have bought a short bed and been done with it. My truck is my home away from home. This fancy newfalgled rig even has led lights in the bed that i can turn on with the key fob. That right there is luxury to me.

May I suggest one of these. This or the Coleman black cat (if you can find one) will take the chill off in a small space very well (crawl into bag or get up in morn). Yep, keep the sliding window cracked.

You know ive been thinking about a space heater like that. It can be electric too. This truck has a plug in outlet in the bed. My yota did too, but it didnt have remote start. With this truck i could fire up the motor and run an electric space heater in the bed all before getting out of my sleeping bag. Its on my list. Behind spare wheels with studded tires, trailer, canopy, deer-proof winch bumper etc etc etc. Dont think ill be buying many new guns in the near future. Such is life.

Full sized for me as well - F150 and a Toyota Sequoia. Sequoia will never look “nice” after 2 trips to Idaho down their goat trails. Figure you can walk the road for 3 miles or listen to the sage making beautiful running lines down each side. 2 years of that and it’s a hunting rig for sure - or I need to buff the scratches out of the clearcoat. One thing I’ll say about the full sized Toyota’s - never touched them mechanically for anything - and I’ve got 185,000 miles on it. Almost broke in. Our Toyota minivan has 410,000 on it and running strong. After my Toyota experiences, I’d have a hard time buying something else.

That is insufficient evidence you own a new truck. We need to see the payment book that comes with it.

BTW: Very nice Trail Boss Chevy. I am sure you will enjoy it a long time.

I dont know what a payment book is, but perhaps if you need more proof i can lay naked across the hood with "wawhitey" written in whip cream across my body so as to barely cover my fun bits and post that pic here. Just an idea. I may do it no matter what, might be a good avatar pic. Take it easy on me though, its january after all, its cold out.

I suppose "payment book" dates me alright. Years ago a person that was not rich enough to buy a car or truck with cash or check the dealer could verify, would get a payment book. That book came with 36 payment sheets. What you learned right away after you purchased your vehicle, was that the months went by very quickly, but the years went painfully slow.

Its crew cab. Took me several weeks to find a full bed trailboss custom. Had to buy it sight unseen, while it was still in transit. Short beds are all over every lot. Full beds are unicorns. Pretty stoked with this truck though, god its nice. Just wish i couldve gotten it with a stick and a cd player, but times have changed.
