fall 2016 looking better.

Postby 2Rivers » 05 22, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Did not draw a Wyoming elk tag. Colorado elk, building points for 2017. However I will be in the woods for Minnesota bear hunting. Had 3 points going into the draw. September 1st is opening day.

Will you be baiting bears? Going with a guide?
A buddy kills a B and C every year in Mn.

I have used lots of breads and sweets with some produce/apples. Try to stay away from meat. Going to try more granola, filling and licorice this year. We are limited to 3 baits per hunter and the timber wolves have ruined to many good baits. I'm thinking about suspending bait off the ground too.

A buddy of mine claims that wolves wont feed out of barrles.
I use dog food mixed with marshmallows in a barrel, to tide them over t the next time I bait. But apples and prunes/plums,.. they fill up on those.
I wish I was closer I would buy a couple pallets of candies,..

We can't use barrels on public land. Only on private. Seems silly because we have to register bait sites with the DNR. They want GPS coordinates too. You could pull the barrel after you fill your tag or no later than say two days after close of the season.

Idaho requires pulling barrels and filling holes 10 days after the close of the seasons

I will say too many guys leave barrels in the woods.
We need a bait tag for every 55 gallons of steel barrels. . Im going to small 15 gallon barrels next year One barrel for fruit. the other for grains/dogfood/ marshmallow syrup mix

Harvested my bear over bait on Thursday. Weighed #205 lbs field dressed. Heart shot using the CVA muzzleloader. 15 yard shot, 5 yard tracking job. Still baiting 3 bait sites to use up remaining bait.
