Spot and Stalk Blacktail Down!

Postby elkmtngear » 08 28, 2012 •  [Post 1]

Cory Gabrielson of Elk Mountain Gear was able to move in on this guy for a 40 yard shot on Saturday. The buck was taken in Northern California, West of the Redding area, B Zone.

Thanks bullrub. We have been seeing a lot of hard horned bucks this Season, very early for this! This guy also had a broken tine. Weird!

Freebird, here is the story I got from Cory:

Apparently he spotted two bucks from his rig, feeding along an oak ridge. He used the SLIP System as a shield, to walk up the skid road, moving ahead when the bucks would feed, and stopping when they would look his way. He was able to move in underneath them, and planted the SLIP System next to a big digger pine. He had about a 40 yard uphill shot, he drew from behind the digger pine, leaned out, and took the shot.

According to Cory, he shot way low, and the buck jumped straight up in the air, came back down, and turned and stared at his buddy as if to say "what did you just do to me"? (Cory thinks he might have hit him in the rear hoof).

With the buck broadside, intently staring at the other buck, Cory was able to release a second arrow, which found its mark.

Sometimes the SLIP System can help you get where you need to be to make the shot, but a little luck is always nice too! ;)
