Spike bucks, whitetails

Postby GobbleFarmer » 10 12, 2015 •  [Post 1]

As I said on another thread I believe that most spikes are genetically superior and the main reason of where I get this opinion from, is Grant Woods. If you watch this video I think you will understand, specifically the part I'm talking about is from 1:15 min/sec to 2:10.

Most spikes are late born fawns, they dont have enough time to put on weight and body size much less grow significant antlers.

make sense to me. now my only question is will those late fawns always produce a delayed antler growth, or will it stabilize the next winter

IIRC, Dr James Knoll had an article out about this very subject, to paraphrase, his studies showed that by the age of 3.5 the early born spikes had caught up to the other bucks.
