High Plains Muley hunt

Postby easeup » 11 12, 2014 •  [Post 1]

got my first ever late season archery hunt up on the high plains in January. Anyone got any tips for me on how you can sneak up on a muley buck with nothing to hide behind but cholla and creosote and maybe an occasional mesquite?

Wow i have nothing constructive to add here so ill be a smartass. Build up some belly calluses, crawl and hope to god you dont crawl onto a rattler or coral snake. Looks like tough country to hunt deer! Ill think of that pic next time im cursing the thick timber and brush and steep hills here.

I would probably try and "Antelope" hunt it. Find draws and or some kind of high spot to glass. Find the does that time of year.

Good luck!

thanks for the humor guys. I think you guys think the same as I.
this is near Roswell NM. the plan to date is to spot from the pick up with binocs and determine a good sneak path to them
crawl to close the distance, hope for luck, then make a long shot with the Mathews.

Contrary to everywhere I have hunted elk, where you get in a good area and just try to see them before they see you in the dark timber; on this chase I intend to spot one a mile a way and then the hunt starts.

and yes I need to get to Lowe's for some knee pads, but thanks for letting others know also.

easeup... have you considered using one of the Poison Arrow Decoys for your muley spot and stalk hunt? I have not tried the mule deer decoy but did have great sucess with the cow elk decoy during my ID archery elk hunt this year. Ed (elkonthebrain) and I were within 60-70 yards of a singing bull, trying to call him in and we actually ended up calling in a couple of cows and a calf. All three of the elk (cows/calf) pin pointed me several times (under 25 yards) and went back to feeding when I waggled the cow face decoy at them.

Keep an eye on the Mesquite. An area we hunt in AZ the deer love eating the leaves.
