"new" deer rig

Postby wawhitey » 07 29, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Just got my Vortex scope in the mail, thanks Paul. Got it mounted on my new (to me) deer rifle today and will be dialing the scope in tomorrow morning before the heat. Pre '64 (56) Winchester model 88 in .308 that I just bought for a song on armslist a week and a half ago. It's a thing of beauty, but it wont be a safe queen.

just took it for a spin in the backyard. shooting 100 yards for now. somebody who owns a bunch of these told me they just love the 150gr core lokts. i was skeptical, but man its one fine shooting machine!

took me 5 bullets to have that new vortex dialed in, and im just nailing it at 200. have to stop shooting cause i only have half a box of this kind of ammo left. kind of sad right now.

What a sweet rifle. Love the smooth lever action on the 88s, and yours is from the era when Winchesters had legendary quality. Removeable magazine means you can shoot pointed bullets. 308 is a great round. How long is the barrel? Which Vortex glass did you mount? How well does it shoot on day 1?

22inch barrel, vortex diamondback hp 3-12x42. man ive only shot 9 bullets through it and its dead nuts bullseye at 200 yards no problem. its shooting better with those cheapo core lokts than i wouldve ever believed. just ding dong dead on. im in love.

if i ever stumble upon a pre 64 model 88 in .243 im buying it. in good condition of course.

model 88??!!! i never new that thing existed!!

gah..i want one! that is a lever action? do you lose accuracy by not having all those locking lugs of a bolt action? i also want a ruger No1. sometimes a good bolt is just so vanilla. hahahha..

pointysticks, for all intents and purposes, they are a bolt action. theyre just bolt actions that are operated via lever. research them a bit, theyre awesome. in fact when winchester introduced them in 1955 they advertised them as "the bolt action rifle with a lever" im amazed at the accuracy im getting with freaking core lokts. if youre interested in one of these, the most common caliber is .308, and then .243 (still hard to come by) only other calibers they came in were .284 and .358 but they made very few of those, and people want a lot of money for them. for a good condition pre 64 .308 the standard going rate is about $800 but i got mine from a guy on armslist for $600 and its in excellent condition. there is a pre 64 .308 for sale at clarks in colville, wa right now for $500 with two extra mags. pretty good shape seems like, but a little minor damage to bottom of stock next to butt plate.

i also have a post 64 in .308 thats at the gunsmith being bastardized right now, that ones for open sight work, and will suffer a bit more abuse than my pretty pre 64 scoped one

oh hell i just found a guy in oregon with a pre 64 .243 for sale, trying to work out a deal with him right now. if i can pull this off it will be my third model 88. i should probably stop after this.
