Got a bear tag

Postby Jhg » 05 30, 2023 •  [Post 1]

I drew a bear tag for archery and hope to see a nice one as I will not drop the string on a cocker spaniel sized bear. I will not sit 8 feet behind the bear from the camera either to make it seem larger, if I am fortunate enough to have a successful shot at a mature boar. Just sayin.

Any advice appreciated. I do need to bone up on shot placement all angles and follow up tracking wisdom.

That a colorado tag? You have to draw and pick a weapon there?

As far as shot placement, my favorite drop-em-hard shot is a frontal chest shot, but i use a rifle. May not be the best idea with a bow. Assuming youre looking for a broadside shot, just aim for vertical center, and a bit further back than youd aim on a deer or elk, as their vitals are situated a bit further back. A new concept thats gained popularity is the "middle of the middle" aiming point, but i feel a bit further forward than that provides a greater margin for error, more forgiving. I aim about a handspan or so aft of the shoulder crease.
As for tracking... if youre following a blood trail, have a sidearm ready to rock, cause you never know. And they can disappear behind a blowdown or bush a lot easier than a carcass that has antlers sticking up.
What are your hunt dates? What kinds of foods will the bear be on in colorado that time of year? Going on a specific bear hunt, or is it going to be something youll do opportunistically while chasing elk or deer?

Good information.

I will be hitchhiking this tag on my elk archery. But WHEN I arrow my elk I plan to sit the gut pile.

There are berrys a little above where I will be, but may be late for them in September. I could also try calling.

I know my .45 is no Casull, but I would have it weighted down with buffalo bore hardcasts. My other round of choice is Hornady critical duty. I might have one of those in line after a couple buffalos. I figure by then if I am still triggering rounds something rip n tear might be a nice change of pace.
But, as we all know, this is all just conjecture.
