He's a smart one to get that big in that area. Lots of things that want to eat him.

Super bummed. Work just told me my next job got moved up. Now i only get to hunt the first day of september, then its off to alaska. So due to the effort required to get into the area i need to be to hunt the buck i was going to go after, thats no longer worth the trouble, not for one day. Ill just go spend the first in one of my stands in another area to try to get my nemesis from last year. Trying to look on the bright side though, i still get the whole late season off, and leaving earlier on this trip increases my chances of getting back in time for modern elk season.

Well, hell . But.....it looks like the late deer season in your neck of the woods is smack dab in the middle of the WT rut; that's not a bad deal as a consolation prize vs. hunting the entire early season I suppose. Those WT bucks will be outa their heads chasing does during your late archery deer season I would think. Sure hope you get a crack at that dinosaur buck you've been watching. Ya, would be nice you make it back by the end of OCT so you can get some modern elk hunting in before you head out after deerzilla :D.

Elk is oct 26- nov 3. Deer nov 10- dec 15. If i get even the last few days of the elk season to hunt that will make me a happy boy. If the weather is good on my trip i may get the whole thing.

Looking that buck in the face makes me think "Oh Jerky". Let us know how fit he is to eat. I have had old ones that were great, but I have never taken an old one in the rut.

So even with the broken tine hes gross 161 7/8ths. If you assume the g4s were the same length (they look the same in the tcam pics) he would have been 167 1/8th gross. Taxidermist says 7.5 - 8.5 yrs old based off tooth wear. His g5 and g4s shrunk significantly from last year.

Even with the broken tine it would easily clear the p&y net minimum. Im going looking for the tine in the morning. I have a pretty good idea where he got in the fight that busted it. Man, he really got his ass beat. After skinning him, taxi was showing me all the spots where the other bucks antlers had bruised the crap out of his neck, head, ass etc, in places antlers punctured both hide and muscle. The crop eared buck really did a number on him.

I dont have any of this years pics of him handy on my phone, but these are last years pics of the jerk that busted up his rack the other day.

As for the original buck in this thread, these last 5 years ive just considered him a sept only game, as hes disappeared mid september. Last year i hung a cam a ways off, as i had my suspicions about where he went. Got him daylight walking by that cam in the first 3 days of late archery both last year and this year, then gone again. But it gave me an even better idea of where he was going. So this year about a week after i finished deer hunting i set a couple cams and confirmed my suspicions. Got him on 2 cameras several times about a half mile apart between 2 major creeks coming off the mountain. Dont know why i have been dragging my feet on this buck for so long, he was a shooter 5x5 even back in 2015. I have him figured for no younger than 9.5 next year. I need to get in there and hang some stands as soon as the snow is gone.

He eats just fine. Ive eaten several bucks in the 8.5 - 10.5 yr range. Ive also eaten 1.5 - 2.5 yr old bucks. Only difference i can tell is the older ones pack a hell of a lot more meat. Lately though ive been eating lots of bear steak, my favorite.

Depends on how lazy or motivated im feeling. On the lazy end of the spectrum i just throw some lawrys or alpine touch on it. On the motivated end ill chop up some fresh garlic and sweet onions to sautee it in with some black pepper. Avacado oil on the pan. Dont have to do much, the meat from a berry fed bear pretty much speaks for itself.

The bear I’ve eaten came from northern Minnesota they were eating mostly willow shoots, road kill and gut piles and my buddy wasn’t much of a cook

My youngest daughter wants a bear rug and I’ve always thought a bear should be big to kill
A neighbor has his house full of big elk deer and bear
His comment a small rug is a whole lot easier and cheaper and a whole lot more practical

Your neighbor is a wise man. If you want a rug, a small to medium sized bear is the way to go. Rugs take up a LOT of space. If you get a real big boar, id say a shoulder mount is a better choice. But even an average bear will look really small as a shoulder mount. Needs to be a good mature boar. I have just 1 shoulder mount, as i tend to shoot dink bears. Would like to get a couple more big boars of different colors for shoulder mounts, but that will all be based on luck. Any bear that responds to my fawn calls gets shot, big or small.
