Son's first fishing trip

Postby 7mmfan » 06 24, 2019 •  [Post 1]

My son is a week away from 23 months old, and we finally got him out on the water for his first official fishing trip. In my life before fatherhood, I was a charter boat captain in AK for 5 years, and a fly fishing guide in WA for another 6-7 years. Fishing isn't just a hobby for me, but an important part of my life. I was so excited to have a son to share this all with, so I've been biding my time until the right opportunity presented itself it get him on the water where we would have nice weather and success. Saturday I finally got the chance to borrow a buddies saltwater boat and head into Puget Sound in search of salmon. My wife, Grayson, and myself made the run which he enjoyed thoroughly. Steering the boat and looking at all the ferry boas, cargo ships, float planes, and other fisherman were definitely highlights for him.

We started fishing at 1:30. I got the first rod down on the rigger and turned to get the other one out and the first rod pops off! Fish on! we quickly landed that one and then repeated the process 3 times in a row! Talk about fast action. We then lost 3 or 4 in a row trying to get Grayson to see them swimming in the water before netting them. Finally, after a grueling 10 minutes without a bite, we landed our 4th fish for a limit, barely an hour after starting. He liked poking them, but was hesitant to pick them up or really mess with them to much.

After all the activity, we headed into Kingston, and walked into town and got an early dinner and some ice cream before playing in the park and then making the run home. All in all it was a fantastic day, and I was very pleased with how well he did in a new environment. He seemed to really enjoy being on the water. Here's to many happy fishing trips coming soon! Welcome aboard son!

How cool is that! Looks like you have a new fishing partner mister; he'll be "borrowing" lures from your tackle box before you know it :D. Nice job on the blackmouth also.

Thanks RJ. I caught him playing with a flasher this morning! Not something thats in my usual repertoire of fishing gear, but I've had to get outside my box to catch these silly Puget Sound fish.

You can never start them too young!!!!!!!

And it doest need to be just the boys.
My wife had shot 30 plus mulies , all with her dad before I met her
My oldest daughter was baiting hooks and casting at 4 years old.

So when the girls come along take them too!

You nailed it Lefty. My wife's friend asked me the other day if I was so glad I had a boy to share my outdoor lifestyle with, and both my wife and I laughed. It doesn't matter girl or boy, they'll all get an early start outdoors and learn to be self sufficient. Whether they decide to pursue it in the long run is their decision, but boys and girls all get treated the same in the fishing boat or the field. I actually look forward to the prospect of a daughter that I can raise to whoop up on boys, shoot straight, and cast a country mile.
