Shed Antlers

Postby elkoholic » 11 14, 2012 •  [Post 1]

How many of you guys found sheds while hiking around this past season?

For me, finding a nice shed is like gettin a trophy. I will post pics as soon as I can get them to proper size were the site will accept them.

I have no luck with finding antlers. My dad found two deadheads on our first day out in Nebraska.

This one was so cute I tied it up as camp mascot.

But the trophy I found was a pair of 5x5 mulie up on top of a lava dome. Wierd place. It looked like they just dropped off each side of the bucks head as he laid there on the only soil with grass around

I ran into a small buck 2x2 with the skull. It was similar to Vanish's, but I did not pack it out. When I see things like that I always wonder what it was like for them at the end.

I have only found one small 6 pt. elk shed but 2 years ago on the last day of rifle season I found this whitetail that had been dead since about the first of Sept and this was the Thanksgiving weekend.

After shooting my Blacktail this year. When I was packing out my deer back to the truck I came across both sheds from the year prior to my buck. They will be put on the wall next to me deer. I believe this was a once in a lifetime find.

We have never found sheds where we hunt because it is in the high alpine country. The elk aren't in this country when they shed but I have found sheds at lower elevations in other areas. Been wanting to spend more time shed hunting in the early spring but turkey hunting is always keeping me busy at that time of year. Just not enough time to do it all "born to hunt, forced to work".
