Mouth calls

Postby currie » 08 23, 2018 •  [Post 1]

I bought a bunch of mouth calls the diaphragm ones or mouth reeds what ever you want to call em. They came in blue, red, white and black. They say that they are for different things. Does anyone go back and forth with the 4 calls during a sequence or do you just stay with one.

A lot of calls are similar, but, they are all a bit different in construction, width/length, quantity of latex layers, thickness of latex, etc. (clear as mud, right). Ideally, if a hunter can use one reed to make both cow and bull sounds, that is optimal for many reasons. I personally, use one call for bull sounds and one for cow (both Berry reeds) and that's just the way I've done it for a looooong time. I would say that using four reeds is probably a bit much (too much switching back and forth). They probably all take just a bit different tongue and air pressure to make sound right which would be a challenge to keep the right sounds going each time you switched. I'd recommend you settle on one (max two) calls for your elk calling endeavors.

Everyone has a different shaped pallet and some reeds brands/designs are going to work better than others for you. So you really have to experiment once you've learned some basic sounds. Using a reed that fits you well makes it much easier to make a variety of sounds and you will know it right away once you master the basics. So buy 4 reeds, but different styles, brands etc. and try each for ease of results. That will point you in the right direction. My guess is once you figure that out 1 or 2 reeds is all you will need or want to mess with.
