Mushrooms, anyone?

Postby Jhg » 08 19, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Elk like mushrooms and its worth paying attention to that in your area. There is some dark timber I know about that will hold elk if the mushrooms bloom. Need a good dose of rain and poof, mushrooms pop up everywhere on an otherwise bare forest floor. The elk go big time for these shrooms and will hold in these areas until the supply is stripped. The conditions need to be right- moisture, temp, etc. Not every year is a good one, some years nothing at all. Scouting this weekend, we found the mushrooms are popping and the elk are coming in.

I am no mushroom picker, but It seems to me it takes more than a summer thunder shower, or short warm rain to bring out the mushrooms. I see them after it has cooled off some, with temperatures in the low 60's, or better in the 50s, and a sustained period of several days where it rains for several hours each day. As soon as it clears up the mushrooms pop up. Commonly I see them in later September about the time the elk breeding period starts.

Jhg, I had to tie the mushrooms to elk activity, or this thread would have needed to be moved to another forum. :D

If they're chanterelles I'll be fighting the elk over them!
I carry a lightweight cloth grocery bag if I come across some of them or hawks wings, bolletes or hedge hogs.

I love chantrell mushrooms! I had no idea elk or deer ate them? Bear? Wow, great information!
If you can't find me, I'm not lost. I'm hunting!
