I wish. I should be tagged out right now but thanks to three 'missed' shots in WA, I still have my WA elk tag. (Which I will fill in late season) So far this season my partner has killed two bulls and I have killed one. I called in Scott's WA bull opening weekend in Sept. Then we both killed good bulls in MT. Almost the 'perfect' year.

Next year I'm going to try and hunt three states for elk (which will be a first). WA for the first two weekends, then MT and if we are lucky enough to tag out quickly again, it's off to meet Phantom in ID on the way home. Gotta love the OTC tag.

Yep. No kids and three weeks off per year to hunt. I do feel fortunate.

Nice photos for sure, I do love that one too Conlan. Be honest though, would you really ever pack a rack out of the woods with the antlers sticking in the air???? (grin)

I knew this question would come up eventually. It deserves a legitimate answer.

I have carried antlers out the other way and it has always driven me CRAZY. When I flip the antlers like you like to carry them, it makes it so I can't sit down and rest unless I find a tall blowdown. If I was only carrying 60-80 lbs. this wouldn't really be a problem but when it's 120+ lbs. and literally half of an elk, it gets real heavy. Not to mention the closest possible pack out to the truck is about 5 miles.

There are two OR boys that I sort of know that planted the seed of the idea. They own XxX Archery in Rainier, OR and happen to be some elk killing pros. I read their article last year from their ID hunt, and that's how they carried the antlers. I always wondered why until I tried it. This year I started out the normal way and quickly wanted to kill myself due to not being able to sit and rest. When I remembered "their method" my first thought was, "I hope nobody tries to shoot me." Lol.

Honestly, if the country you hunt isn't too thick, this is far and away the superior way to carry antlers. (Paul, it goes without saying that this method wont work for you guys but if I had your dedicated "pack squad" I wouldn't even worry about it.) I will never go back to carrying them flipped over again unless the terrain forces me too. Even when going through the relatively thick stuff it's easy to maneuver a medium sized bull. If I ever kill that 350" I might have to change things up though.

Sorry. Long answer to a seemingly easy question. ;)

I don't have any of myself but did take a few this year.

My sister packing out her elk

My dad with the front half of my deer as well as the cape and horns. If ever you want to kill just talk yourself out of bringing your backpack because "your dad has everything in his pack". Works every time. I told him I would go back down and grab the cape but he said screw it just throw it on.

Helping out on my cousin's moose hunt this year...nobody wanted to attempt to pack the cape and horns. I was nominated after I had already hauled 2 rears and a front ;)
