Could someone tell me details on terminology? 5X5, 6X6, 7X7, 8X8...
I have heard imperial, monarch, royal.. but can't find any information.

4x5 4 points on one side and 5 points on the other side

The other hunters could probably give more pure accurate descriptions than mine.

Not sure where it comes from, but a 6x6 (elk with 6 points on each side) is a royal, a 7x7 is imperial, and an 8x8 is a monarch. The royal tine also refers to the 4th point which is commonly the longest.

That is exactly what I know them to be. Commonly heard in RMNP amongst the tourists. It derives most of its roots from the Red Deer and european hunting roots. Most western hunters only talk in 6x6 and do not use imperial, royal and monarch to describe anything as most base their expectations off the B&C or P&Y scoring systems.

I certainly subscribe to Cnelk's definitions. They are the only ones that count in my dictionary...

Cnelk has it pretty close to perfect. I might fine tune it a little for the last week of the season.

Cow -- Shoot
Spike -- Shoot
forky-4 point -- Shoot
etc. (no calves) -- Shoot
I think you get the idea.

If the area you are hunting is not too good, you should probably implement the last week strategy a little early.

I never had this confirmed, but this is what I have heard for years. An elk with a total of 12 antler points (6x6) is called a ''royal" bull; one with 14 points (7X7) is an "imperial" and one with 16 points (8X8) is a monarch. Raghorns and cows fill more freezers and save wall space. As cnelk says! Shoot Shoot Shoot! So that makes all other legal elk called shooters! So if you like elk meat in your freezer, take the shooter.

thanks everyone. My dad got a super nice 7X7 on public land ( first season rifle) . He has been hunting Colorado elk for 22 years or more. Someone told him that a 7X7 could be called an imperial, Just curious.

Your dad wasn't hunting up by Walden was he? I saw a really dandy 7x7 that was taken opening day up there 1st rifle. If it is the same bull it was a cool story (heard it through the game warden that checked him).
