20, 40, 60 ??

Postby Beekeeper » 06 13, 2012 •  [Post 1]

Here's my quandary about my pins. I'm going on my first archery elk hunt this September in Colorado. My eyesight is excellent for distance (20/10) however it isn't very good inside 3 feet. My pins are set for 20, 30, 40, 50 and are getting blurred together. I'm thinking about changing to a 20, 40, 60 setup.

Does this make sense for elk? Does anyone else have this problem?

Depending on your bow speed and arrow weight it should work. Before removing any pins shoot your 20 yard pin at the target, then shoot your 40 yard pin...how much drop do you have between the 20 to 40? Then repeat the process 40 then 60 yard pins whats the difference? Then shoot at 30 yards using your 20 yard pin...where does it hit? Then use your 40...where does it hit? Depending on your setup you should see little drop between the 2. Play around till your comfortable with the gap/drop between the pins at different yards. You may need to stagger your pins like 15, 30, 45. Play around and see what works for your setup.

As James points out definitely shoot your equipment first & see how comfortable & accurate you are at shooting this way! I've done similar pin movements in the past & I generally center the opening between the two pins on the target & it worked very good for hunting purposes! In other words on a 30yd shot if my 20 & 40 were below & above the intended target spot to hit, I would adjust from there for 33yd or 38yd. Whatever you practice with do it a ton to become automatic with it & even then a guy can get rattled during an encounter & choose the wrong pin or opening! (grin) Maybe you should consider a single pin slider? Set it at 30yd & adjust from there high or low up to 40yds through lots of practice & you'll know where to hold that one pin in that 0-40yd area? After 40yd you just adjust the slider for that occasional distant shot? Just a thought!

I know a lot of peopl go with the old standard 20-30-40 ect pin placement. For me that never worked out well with the faster bows. I moved to 25-35-45-55 about 5 years ago and have never looked back. I also went with smaller pin sizes in the 45 and 55 pins. I actually like it when I get a target inside the gap (30-40-50) I seem to hit these distances very well. Also if you look towards extending your site out forward it may help with the blurr

All great advice, add one more to the pile! Change out your peep sight to a smaller one!

I have a single pin with a slider. When I'm hunting its set on 30 yards 90% of the time. I just aim low or high depending on the distance.

iRem, why a smaller peep? Doesn't that restrict the light under low light conditions? The reason I ask is I just had a larger peep installed with the new string...

First question, before you switched your peep sight did you ever have any problems with finding the sight?
I believe that a larger sight allows more room for error. When I look through my peep sight and have my pin in sight, I actually look through the sight and at the target/Elk and the sight is a bit of a blur. You have to train your eyes to look through it. Shoot your bow with both eyes open, as you pull back you may use your dominate eye for the initial set up to the target then open the other eye and train you eyes to see target and pin while using both eyes.

Blurred fuzzy pins? i need glasses to read and had problems seeing my pins. i went to a peep with a lens from speciality archery. i got the lowest power they make. it cleared my pins without making my target fuzzy. it really improved my shooting and no problems hunting with it.

Mine are set at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. My sight is a Sure Loc lethal weapon max so I have the ability to slide my site to reach out to 110. Of course anything beyond 70 is just for fun, but I like to know I have the capability.
