Lots Of Rifle Elk Hunters! Wow!

Postby ElkNut1 » 10 15, 2012 •  [Post 1]

Was out scouting a unit for deer & it happened to be the day before the rifle elk opener here. We saw quite a few camps where there were 6-12 guys in each basecamp. Wow, that's a lot of hunters!! Some of these OTC units get pounded more than I thought! Nothing against rifle hunting elk but I'd like less competition when doing so! (grin)

You haven't seen anything yet. Colorado is a sea of orange.

That was the original reason why I started looking at archery hunting instead of firearms seasons for big game.
I dont like seein huntes ( or people in general) around every ridge
How do elk make it thru that season :?

I know it can be very frustrating to see all the hunters at time. This is how I look at it though. How many of those hunters you see ever get out of their truck? Then how many of those hunters that get out of thier truck ever leave the roads? Then of those how many walk more than a mile? By the time its all said and done it can become pretty easy to get away from most of them.

Last lear I went to a spot my buddy had told me about and parked at it. It looked like a Wal Mart parking lot, and to say the least I was not impressed. I was a little sceptical but my buddy said to just get a mile back and we would be by ourselves. No kidding at about a mile to a mile and a half all the tracks just stopped and headed back to the truck. We continued on and by mile two we saw 25 elk. Then after chasing the elk I ended up shooting my nicest deer to date. It was no trophy but I was very happy with it as I had been hunting since Sept and hadn't put anything in the freezer..Me and my dad are going back second week of November. This time we have a week to blow and I'm hoping in the worst way we can get him his first bull. The best part was on the drag out we ran into about 6 people all about a mile from the truck. They were all hungover and not too serious about hunting. Of course they wanted to know where we got the deer and I told them. Got the same response from all of them "Thats just too far." I go to hunting camp to hunt...I'll have a few every night after the hunt but when it comes to getting drunk I guess I'll just drink after I get something. :D

You gotta get up to hunt. I've yet to kill anything in the camper or wall tent.

Those ARE the OTC seasons.

1st Rifle and 4th Rifle are draw - except for any leftovers

I went last weekend with my son with a couple cow tags. The weather killed us on day one. Wet heavy snow. Just a spike came by my stand.

I was actually surprised at the LACK of hunters where we were at

No kidding Bill. I wanted to spend a day up grouse hunting with the boys but I think we'll wait until next year and do it during the break between archery and first rifle. I don't want to mess up anyone's hunt and there's no place to go right now without seeing a ton of guys.
