Folks I'm looking for an old thread I think elknut started where he talked about a bull that groaned or growled, can't really remember what he called it exactly, but it was a warning sound where the bull was asking for whatever it sensed or heard to show itself or sound off....

I've had a handful of situations where I heard a bull kinda halfway bugle/growl and I completely miss read the situation. I felt like the bull was just kinda bugling while on the bed and in every case it was unsolicited. Also every time I just decided to position myself in a safe direction so there was no chance of him smelling me and waiting til he got up. However in every case except for one the bull just silently disappears. The one case where he did not we heard him sneaking away with his cows and was close enough to challenge him, he won't be making that mistake again.

If anyone can help me find that old thread, please share I would like to read it again and try to understand better why is happening in that situation.

Not what I remember. It seemed like it was a situation as I described and the author felt like if a bull gives you that sound then you better identify yourself or he is going to sneak on out. Seemed like the thread posted the scenario and asked what is your interpretation and what would you do. I remember all this because it matched those encounters that I described to a T. Now I would like to read the thread again and now wondering if I made all that up make me feel better of my failed attempts in those situations.

It was more of a sound that says "ok I hear you sneaking around out there, who are you". If you don't say anything. The bull knows something is a bit off and sneaks out.

GROWL!

Quick Action Tip -- If silently (no calling) slipping in on a bugling bull and near or closer than 100 yards and all you hear is a growl from the bull ( almost sounds like a bear) you're near give a quick soft cow call or two, snap a branch or rustle brush or whatever is nearby imitating a cow coming towards his bugling , this should calm him down & allow you to come closer. Be on the close watch, he can come towards your cow calls!

What Does It Mean When You Hear It?

It means a bull has heard something or seen an unidentifiable movement, it's not really surprised where a bark may be needed so he growls, he's asking what it is! If it's a predator such as mountain lion, bear, wolf, hunter, etc he will not receive a satisfactory response in most cases so knows something isn't right and slips out of there. However, if it's another elk it will generally respond to let him know what he's heard. At times you will hear another bull use this growl right back at him. No doubt a bull may use this growl as a warning with other additional sounds to ward off intruders. No matter if this growl is a warning to another bull who he feels is slipping in silently or not, point is if you hear it be prepared to act accordingly!

Elknut, that's what I was remembering, after you answered I looked in the playbook and found the sound. Should have checked there first I guess.... good info nonetheless and thanks for the clarification.
