What's the one elk sound that you have a tough time replicating?

Glunking on a reed is tricky as the pressure has to be just right. You're basically popping your tongue on and off the reed while making a gulp sound with you voice.

Chuckles are one of the hardest sound to learn but very critical to learning them the right way. Here is a video I did where I break it down. Hope this helps.

That is a tough one to replicate. We are trying to mimic an animal that has lungs and an esophagus that is twice the size of ours. That gutteral bottom end is something that we as humans really have to do a combination of several things to even try and get close. The first is a bigger grunt tube that already gives us a deeper bottom end and then really light touch on the reed to get the lowest note the reed will allow. From there is adding the deepest growl you can muster and even puttering your lips like a lip bawl. Only problem with the lip bawl added in is we tend to add more pressure on to the reed which raises the note and takes it out of that bottom end. I've noticed the deepest bottom end coming from the Rump Shaker Grunt Tube from Wapiti River Outdoors.

Dieter Kaboth (sp), a former world champion caller, once told me he couldn't lip bawl. So, he just used his voice. Must have worked! He won the world with it.

If you stop and think about it, elk don't lip ball or sputter their lips when they bugle either. At least I have never seen one do it! That's just something that people do to try to imitate the sound they want, Elk just growl along with the bugle. It's a mood or emotion thing. Voice infliction plays a big part when using a diaphragm call, especially for grunts, chuckles, and moans.

You're exactly right WW. Elk don't sputter their lips and I'm with you on never seeing an elk do it. That is something that we as people created and named to try and replicate a sound that they are doing with their voice. What to say with our voice when using a diaphragm is something that is part of the fun when trying to match the vocals of an elk. By simply adding our voices we can change the meaning and emotion of a call dramatically.

Thanks for the vid, elkaholicid. That's exactly what I've been trying to do but still no success. I learned to bugle and chuckle with my voice years ago...for me, that was significantly easier than learning to chuckle with a reed. I'll keep at it though, mostly cuz I love a challenge.

No problem ORelksniper. I hope it helps. Just remember to go slow at first to be sure all the parts are there and then speed up slowly making sure all the parts stay with you. You'll get it.
