Favorite Elknut Tactics

What are your go-to or favorite Elknut tactics. A few of my own are 1. Breeding sequence 2. The Threat 3. Cow calling my way to a bull.

If I have a favorite it is "Lonesome Charlie" because I experienced it before Elknut named and explained it. Paul discussed the calling sequence which I had experienced quite by accident. He helped to make it a real practical tool for slow times when nothing seems to work; even tree stand hunting.

Where to begin... for me, it starts with Elk Sounds! Elknut1 has spend 30+ years studying elk in the field and putting a name to the various sounds elk make, and, deciphering what each means when heard; translation....what are the vocal elk desiring, warning you about, or demanding! This is the bedrock of hunting vocal elk, particularly during the rut, (although elk chat year round') and absolutely key to success in the elk woods in my opinion. As far as tactics, Mr. Medel has put into print, on audio, or in video medium and most recently podcasts, varied and effective "situational" measures that only enhance an elk hunter's tool kit. All are worth the time to research, learn, and put into play in the field. The Threat (levels 1-3), deploying a Calling Cows to Him Bugle when up close to a herd bull, and yes sir... both the Advertising and Breeding sequences are money in the bank if you take the time to learn them and put em into use. Although there is some really good stuff out there from some various cats (insert a few names here) I believe Elknut has captured and provided for our use, the most comprehensive and innovative tools of the trade to assist elk hunters in their quest.

I like what Elknut called "Lonesome Charlie" because I recognized it as an excellent call and I had, quite by accident stumbled onto before I knew Elknut had a name for it. I did not know that it was something you could effectively employ on a warm quiet day. It is not a location bugle or anything like that. You just take a diaphragm and make lengthy repeated elky sounds. I think Paul has it on one of his videos, but I forget which one or where. I believe that is where I added two and two and came up with the understanding that it was a solid call for bringing in lone satellite bulls.

Absolutely, there are lot's of others, but the big difference, Elknut methods, using the right ones, work through the entire month of September, not just when the bulk of the cows are in estrus.

We've killed quite a few with the "Call and Stalk". Not sure who the inventor of this was but Paul is the guy who brought it to light for me. Thanks for all you do my friend!

Where I give Paul the most credit is in putting the sounds together and explaining them in a logical way for the average elk hunter. Others had bits and pieces here and there with big voids in the diversity of elk sounds. In the Playbook and videos you have more than enough for anyone to hit the ground running using elk appropriate sounds.
The main caution I would give is for newer elk hunter, don't try to know and use everything. Learn a few of the most frequent sounds and build on them with experience. When I read about hunters consulting their Playbook when they hear an elk sound, I believe they are overloaded with all the possibilities. For a year or so read the Playbook, but take the calling card with you in the field if you feel the need. Year after year add to your bag of tricks from the book.

I agree with many of the comments. It's nice to see so many rely on specific sounds or tactics! I have my favorites as well. (grin) No doubt one of them is the Call & Stalk as Will mentions! That one is tough to beat! Of course the Breeding Sequence is near the top as well. The biggest reason for them topping the list is they are proven performers & put quite a few bulls on the ground! My # 1 sound that I absolutely rely on the most other than a Location bugle to find elk in dark timber is the Popping/Nervous Grunt! That one sound costs more bulls their life than most others put together! Works for us! (grin)
