My first Bull

Postby Birdmonster » 09 26, 2012 •  [Post 1]

My hunting partner Dennis and I have been bow hunting elk for 7 years in Wyoming. DIY hunt on national forest using elknut calls and tactics.
This year we finally succeeded in killing a big herd bull despite hot weather and hunting pressure.
At daybreak we got close to a satellite bull, but he outmanuevered us and got our wind....gone.
Knowing where they bedded we tried to follow the herd And get in close. Before we got set up a cow almost ran us over with 5x5 satellite right on her tail. Happened so fast we could not even get an arrow knocked.
We kept following the herd and set up next to their bedding area in dark timber. Dennis set up about 50yds from me. Using the lost cow call we proceeded to call. Suddenly I heard a elk approaching breaking brush and antlers clacking against limbs. He was heading towards Dennis and passed within 8 yds of my position. I drew back when he was behind a spruce and then let fly my arrow hitting its mark behind his shoulder. He went about 80 yds up the hill. We waited an hour and then went looking for him. To our surprise lay dead a huge 6x6 herd bull. Green score 331.
A bull of a lifetime and my first bull.

Great story and great bull! Persistence pays off. Seven years is a long time to wait to get your first bull and this one is a nice reward for that patience. Good job!

That's one heck of a bull for a first one. You are ruined for life. LOL! I'll bet you are planning for next year already. Congratulations!
