School me on Wyoming NR Elk....

I am a NonResident and currently have 4 Wyo elk preference points. I am thinking of using my points this year by putting in for a decent DIY unit and having General as my second choice. I would like to stay no further than 4 hrs from Salt Lake City, Utah. Any info/help would be greatly appreciated.

I know used to you could draw a general second choice only if you put in for the special draw but I'm not sure if that is even a sure thing anymore.

Just checked the draw for this year. Only 45% of 1st choice drew general in the special draw .

Even half a point will guarantee the elk tag as your first choice in the special drawing. No more drawing that as a second choice unless you are lucky enough to pull a tag in the random draw.

1.5 or actually anything over 1 will get you an elk license in the regular drawing for roughly half the cost of the special draw.

And to be clear ut1031... all units are DIY as long as you're not a non resident in a designated wilderness area.

As far as staying within a distance from Salt Lake just hunt the west side of the state.

Do you have any criteria such as 300 inch bulls or better or are you happy with any bull? Do you prefer to hunt an either sex elk unit in case a bull isn't in the stars for you?

All but 37 1st choice apps drew in the special gen for 2016. Based on past history that number will
Increase to about 125 for 2017. The draw reports are not accurate for Elk gen and antlerless Antelope/Deer hunts.
