Wyoming Reminder

Just over a month until the deadline for Wyoming elk license applications. If anyone has questions regarding the sometimes confusing application system in the Cowboy state feel free to ask here. It's the earliest app deadline in the country and draw results are out by February 28th giving you time to apply in Montana or elsewhere if you don't draw.Best of luck to all in this years drawings.

I have three points in Wyoming now. Not sure I have the time to go this year. Does 4 or 5 points really open up more options or is it just extra insurance for the general draw tag?

4 or 5 opens a few doors for sure. But once you start going there you'll have some serious homework to do. Trends of odds over a few years. Land access issues. Wilderness areas etc.

Not sure what your partner situation is but 4 points can also guarantee you a general license for you and one partner in the less expensive regular drawing.

Remember too if you intend to keep elk hunting you might as well get started in an area you can get a license for as often as possible. Every year even. That's the one thing I don't like about limited quota units..... no learning curve. It's quite likely a 1 time hunt. Even the best elk hunters can struggle in a good unit because it's just new country to them and time flies when you know nothing. If you aren't an experienced elk hunter then you'll most likely do a hard to draw tag even less justice. You only live once..... burn those points and go hunt that's my philosophy!

All good points. I have mainly hunted Washington (15 years this year) but hunted Idaho last year and here you on the learning curve. That said an Idaho repeat is probably at top of list given time constraints. Wyoming will most likely have to wait until 2018. I get both sides of the fence on the wilderness issue but sure wish it was available for non resident DIY.

Does anybody know how old kids have to be to start gettin preference points?

A youth applicant wanting to purchase preference points only must be at least eleven (11) years old at the time of submitting an application and must be at least twelve (12) years old by December 31 of that year.

The minimum age to take any big game or trophy game animal is twelve (12) years of age. An applicant may apply for any big game or trophy game license if he/she is eleven (11) years of age, but must be at least twelve (12) years of age when
hunting.

I'm in with a general group for myself and one other. Keeping my finger crossed, I have a good guide putting us on elk for free, I met him when I was in Jackson, jumped on some horses with him and he had us in elk the whole morning. I have only hunted Colorado so I am really excited to get my boots on the ground in WY. Best of luck to all that enter!

Correct - going to give it a try. Montana or Idaho will be the backup plan.
