Postby sgtgibson » 09 21, 2012 •  [Post 1]

wv-archer And I are on way back from Unsuccessful CO hunt and were discussing what we saw at different elevations, curious what elevations every one had elk encounters at, in CO.

We were camped at 11,500. Saw alit if herd bulls but no raghorns. Kind of weird. Actually saw bulls at 12,000. Too hot here. No heavy rutting

CO ARCHERY HUNTERS, ELEVATION?

All our elk encounters were near 12000' and above. Usually that's the case where we hunt.

Got one bugle this morning around 10k. The other response was around 10,800. Yet to see an elk though! Well, aside from the ones I was trying to call across from this ranch. Those were 8k.

I hunted from 8600 to 10400. The area tops out at about 10600. Opening weekend we found elk all over, but mostly around 9400-9600. I only found one elk above that the whole season. Last day of the season we finally figured out they were bedding in some very thick pines in the bottoms around 8600-8800. It is going to be different in each area.

Got into a lot of elk from 8000 - 9500, I am not convinced that just because its hot that elk will go uphill. We saw rutting activity in the oakbursh at 8500' with tempreatures in the high 70's

CO ARCHERY HUNTERS, ELEVATION?

Any of yall have cattle at those elevations? We had to get over 12k to get above the cattle grazing. Mountains top out at close to 13 where we were at this year.

We were camped at 10400 with the highest altitude in the area being about 11000 ft. We generally had to go down to about 9700 into the drainage to find the elk during the middle of the day. In the evening they would start working up and in the morning they'd be working down. We were hunting in Northern Colorado. This was the first year so we don't know if this was because of the dry year or the norm for them.
