Need some quick advice

Postby Tigger » 11 21, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I am giving a talk tonight to a high school sporting group. They focus on all things conservation, hunting, etc. My talk is on....yep....elk and elk hunting. I have an outline prepared, but I just found out about this yesterday so I could be missing something. Does anyone have any ideas on things to make sure I cover everything? I would be willing to share my document with anyone who wants so they don't have to recreate the wheel if they ever have to give a talk. All ideas welcome!

Thanks guys!

If you want, you can email it to me and I'll run through your talking points (I'm certainly no expert but would be willing to lend a helping eye). I used to give big game hunting seminars for Soldiers years ago and wouldn't mind seeing what you have outlined. rory@wapititalk.com

nothing set in stone....half hour to an hour? probably closer to an hour. I plan to take questions throughout. I printed off some pictures of elk country, bulls, cows, and calves, and my bull from last year. I will bring an elk hide and my antlers from last year.

Tigger, sounds like you definitely have a bunch to talk about. You are well covered there. No advice on that front. Just remember to sip the water, not gulp! Case in point:
Warning---Religious Humor

At my friend's church they are training a new priest. The new priest was
so nervous at his first mass that he could hardly speak. Before his second
week at the pulpit, he asked the Monsignor how he could relax. The
Monsignor said "Next week it may help if you put some vodka in the water
pitcher. After that everything should go smoothly".

The next Sunday the new priest put the suggestion into practice and was able
to talk up a storm and did just great. Upon returning to the rectory,
however, he found a note from the Monsignor.

1. Next time, sip rather than gulp.
2. There are 10 commandments, not 12.
3. There are 12 disciples, not 10.
4. David slew Goliath, he did not kick his ass.
5. We do not refer to Our Savior Jesus Christ and his Apostles as "J.C.
and the Boys."
6. Next week there is a taffy pulling contest at St. Peters, not a Peter
pulling contest at St. Taffy's.
7. We do not refer to the cross as "The Big T."
8. The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost are not referred to as "Big
Daddy, Junior and the Spook."
9. The recommended Grace before meals is not "Rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for
the grub, Yo God."
10. Jesus was consecrated, not constipated.
11. Jacob wagered his donkey, he did not bet his ass.
12. When David was hit by a rock and knocked off his donkey, don't say he
was stoned off his ass.
13. When Jesus broke the bread at the Last Supper he said "Take this and
eat it, for it is my body", he did not say "Eat me."
14. Last but not least, it is the "Virgin Mary", not "Mary with the
Cherry."

You cannot talk about elk hunting without mentioning the fact that it compares to life in general. If you want to get it right you have to be patient and persistent AND never underestimate the value of a good partner.

If you have an hour, you can cover 6 points well. If you only have 1/2 hour, keep it to 3 or 4. With the long outline you have, you will be focused on the outline more than the audience. It sounds like you are introducing young people to elk hunting. Don't try to prove your expertise or to make them journeymen hunters. Personally I would focus on the majesty of the haunts the elk inhabit, the majesty of the beast and generally talk about how experienced hunters pursue them. If you show them a call, don't try to cover the different sounds they make. Just make a call or two. You can introduce them to W.T. and the inmates here that occupy the asylum. Tell them that you post here, and that they can learn a lot by engaging here where there is a friendly non-hostile atmosphere. Just my thoughts.

Thanks a ton guys! The talk went over extremely well as I ended up talking for about an hour and 45 minutes due to all the questions I was getting. After I was pretty much done with my outline, the questions just came rolling in and they also wanted a few more stories. It was definitely a thirsty audience and I got a good plug in for Wapiti Talk! It was pretty fun talking about something like elk hunting!

Tigger, I've had the privilege of giving dozens of Elk Hunting/Calling Seminars, have about 4 Main Point Headings in your mind, anymore than that & it's too much info & you can lose your audience as well as be overwhelmed yourself. Another point is not to have notes, speak from your memory & your heart, this shows confidence & a true passion for the sport. You will see once you start & get over your one minute of nervousness things will flow! (grin) As you're introduced by a spokesman consider having your bugle with you as you take the microphone. Once there Scream out a simple but very powerful location bugle, this will stop any talking or murmuring that still may be going on, you will have their undivided attention! (grin) Tell them that is the Bugle of a bull elk, do any here know the message he was sending? Before telling them, first stop & now introduce yourself & share with them what you intend to speak about. This will help get their attention & settle your nerves! (grin) Now you can explain to them the meaning of Your Bugle & it's one of many bulls use to communicate their message to other elk & so on! This can help get the ball rolling! I can tell you from experience that the more sounds you can share & explain the more your audience gets into it! Just a suggestion bud!

Well this is my first post on this forum.

Your talk is on elk, you are passionate about it as we all are.

But one of the main threats facing everyone of us today is Sportsmanship. Across every state and every season, our hunting is framed by how we conduct ourselves in the field.

No talk on any hunting can be complete without a Sportsmanship frame work.

After the hunt, after the meat is gone, after your partners have all passed, all that is left is the story. So write a good tale.

Maybe a couple of minutes about eating your kill. How hunters waste very little. A list of cool sounding recipe names? ("if any of you are interested I have a couple of go to recipes, etc, etc")
