Become the Decoy

I got started on my "Become the Decoy" act last nite. Freaked Django my halfbreed dog out...wife got a adjitated too. This is going to make it more easier than my first elk hunt two year ago. On that hunt I wanted to do things the hardest way possible...old school...connected too. Now I am taking things next level, whatever it takes mode. I'm not much on carrying extra gear so one of the newfangled elk decoys is out, but if I can mimic the elk movements and take on the likeness of an elk then ok, I go for that.


10 days to get it down and it's on. I have to make this work cause I don't want to get caught with my pants down looking like a cow

Made the ears for the tan hoodie...not easy to find the correct color. Not sure how I will do the but patch...what color is it...looks like off white. Going to get some fabric Sharpie tonite and work on it while making jerky for the trip.

Got some fabric paint from Wal-Mart tonite...looks like this project is going to do better than I expected. Too bad I will be too embarrassed to share in pics.

I don't think I will be fooling anyone. Maybe a nearsighted elk. I don't think it's very hard to fool their eyes and giving them something to look at might make all the difference. Not sure the shot angle will be good but just getting them in bowrange is the first step.

Making more progress and the he thing is looking better with each improvement. I think it looks a lot better than the standard decoy hat and should be easier to implement. Hopefully will get a downwind elk to be the final judge.

Funny thing about it is I look like a cow elk but will be bulging like a bull. I told my wife I'm calling it Katlin.

There are a lot of folks who are not as careful as they should be; they get all pumped and you know what happens... be careful

I put the lipstick on last nite and hopefully can find some taxidermy eyes and glue them on tomorrow. I might be able too walk up and shoot one when I get done.

Be very careful....guys shoot cows and horses and who knows what out there.

One thing in one of your earlier posts on this...you said fool a downwind elk....that isn't going to happen. You can fool their eyes, but you cannot fool their nose. Always play that wind!

Oh, and post pictures. This concept is no good without pictures! We want pictures!!

Decoy is complete. Turned out somewhat better than I thought. I think it might make a bull second guess what he see. Good catchtigger...I definitely need to be downwind of the elk. All the effort is done. It want be a sacrifice carrying the thing.
