Seminar Talk

Postby Swede » 07 22, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I picked up on something that surprised me some. One of the presenters, who mainly hunts Roosevelt elk, said he sleeps in when he knows where he should find the elk. He gets up at 8:00 AM and drives close, then hikes to the elk bedding area. That is where they are gathered and he does not have to shadow them as they go to their nesting ground. He works in close and calls nearby. Wind is key.
I usually try to avoid bedding areas midday as I don't know exactly where they are and they have their eyes, ears and noses on full alert. I have found it possible to talk to the elk. Occasionally a satellite will come to a short bugle, but they are silent.
Maybe RJ or Bryant can add to this. Maybe some of you can help here as that part of the talk was short.

Joel Turner made the main presentation. He was very good, but most of what he had can be found on Elknut's DVDs. He clearly stated he got a lot of his material from Paul.

So he must be hunting from the top of the ridges down and is waiting for the elk to bed and the thermals to change. This works well for us as well but we have many oilfield roads that we can hunt from.

I personally like to be in with the elk well before daylight though as it's much easier to locate bugling elk in the dark. Then if it allows and the wind is good I'll try to intercept the elk on there journey to the bedding area. I stay off to the side and once the cow's are past I'll let out a few cow mews as if a cow wandered off and is lost. The bull usually will come right over to collect this cow allowing for a shot !!

That's about as easy of a hunt you can have !!
