What is a Trailhead

The term "trailhead" come up a lot on elk topics and I am not sure exactly what is meant by the term. The area I hunted had hiking trails, but they didn't play a big roll in my hunt and it seemed more productive to avoid them as they attracted others and the elk avoided the trails.

I am assuming this is a western term for what we call just trails or main trails.

A trailhead refers to a formal legal National Forest parking lot adjacent to a main trail or set of trails. They are often named, appear on official maps, and have official signage. Often will have multiple vehicles parked where hikers, backpackers, fishermen, horse people, and hunters access the National Forest. It is not uncommon for them to be associated with a National Forest Campground.
