Unit 7 WY

Not looking for specific spot in unit 7 but has anyone hunted this particular unit and is it a good unit to burn preference points on? I have hunted Flat Tops, San Juan, Trout Creek area, and the Snowies in WY and now unit 7 has my eye but not sure what to expect. Anyone that can give me some input would be greatly appreciated!

First of all welcome aboard Timber.

7 is talked about a lot. Do you realize how difficult it is to draw the license? I would be making reservations any time soon.

The first question would be bow or gun?

The biggest factor in unit 7 elk is private land. There is a TON of it and as soon as the pressure is on the elk make sure they are on the right side of the fence. Bow season would be best because the elk duds haven't hit the fan yet but even then finding a place to hunt isn't easy. I would say that not only will you need the Game Planner map program so you know the boundaries etc but in the case of unit 7 you would actually need to go out and scout it. Not just for elk but for access. I've hunted lopes and mulies in that neck of the woods. There are roads that are closed that you wouldn't realize until you came to a dead end sign with a few human skulls hanging off of it if you get my drift.

Unless you know something I don't I would say to lower your sights and pick a mid tier unit. I bet you'd kill as big of a bull and have a better time doing it. Playing the public/private land game is tough in 7.

Thanks for the warm welcome and thank for the help! I have 5 preference points now for WY and was looking at various options. I will be hunting with a bow. I was also interested in the Bighorn area and certainly not excluding the Snowies again. I guess to sum it up I am trying to get my plans in order for the 2017 and looking at several different units. Any input is greatly appreciated. I have hunted unit 12 in the Snowies and had a lot of fun but always looking for something new.

Yes, as Joe mentions private ground is your biggest hurdle once you draw that coveted tag. There is public land available but some of the best elk hunting requires you to get on the other side of private land. Look into the area carefully & see if you can talk to ones who have actually hunted it! Welcome to the forum!

Yes unit 7 has some public ground and yes you can kill big bulls there. Learn to hike hard and deep. If you are willing to put some effort in the reward can be fantastic. I won't say where this bull was killed in 7 but it was killed in WY unit 7 somewhere on public ground.
