Called in my first elk!

Postby Lefty » 09 05, 2012 •  [Post 1]

Monday started early . I locate bugled my way to where I was going to hunt. I was to my first setup right at LST. I made a few cow calls , then realized that I grabbed my quiver with target tips.
A very fast hike, run and ATV trip back to the truck.
Back to my first set up . I made two cow calls and something came charging in,.. and I just fell apart I couldnt keep my arrow nocked, my release kept coming off the string, I realized the incoming animal was working downwind fast. At 32 yards I saw a shadow and could tell the moment it was downwind and busted out of there. I did pick up the track, it was an elk but even that close I never saw it

Sounds like an awesome case of bull fever. :-) Nice job.

That's a feeling that I crave more than nearly any other. A few more encounters like that and you will be able to revert back to the shooting form that you have developed over an entire summer of shooting (I hope) . . . . . . . . . range, attach release, breath, smooth draw, anchor, breath, squeeze, dead critter!

Good Deal lefty.

I had a few of those back in the day, but never was able to connect on a bull. You have the advantage of this forum and the knowledge of Elknut and the field staff which.

I am hoping to have some of those encounter in about a week and half

Good Luck

It's amazing how an 800 pound animal can be on you before you know it. I've been busted by so many bulls that "snuck in" while I was cold calling, I can't even begin to count them.

Congrats Lefty, now you know for sure you can make it happen.
Best of Luck,

Way to go Lefty, like they said now you know you can do it.

I remember my first bull call in many years ago. My wife was with me and she had never ever heard a bull bulge before. It was late in the evening about an hour before dark. We made a setup and I started cold cow calling, this bull bugle back right under use about 200 yards. My wife's eyes got the size of a dinner plate and I thought she was going to stop breathing. This bull came right up the side of the draw to about 25 yards and started going crazy bugling grunting and tearing up every little tree as he came in. It scared my wife so bad she jumped up and took off running up the hill. Needless to stay the bull went the other way. When I got back to the pickup where my wife had locked herself inside. I was laughing so hard it made her mad. I asked her why in the world did she take off running. All she said was I thought I was going to die.

Best feeling there is to call one of these animals in! Good job! It's tough to control those nerves, for sure and we've all been there. Honestly, if I didn't get that feeling anytime I have an elk coming in, I would stop hunting. It's the difference between doing it myself and buying a side of beef.

I'm fairly certain the first big bull I ever drew on was when I didn't have an arrow on the string. The result? Broken bow string wrapped all around my cams and the bull standing there looking at me from 25 yards away, and all I can do is look back.
