Which dates for west Wyoming?

Postby sasquatch » 04 04, 2016 •  [Post 1]

If having the choice to hunt the 6th thru the 23rd or the 13th to the 30th which would you pick?

I've never been to the area before if that makes a difference but I do plan to make a trip in August for a few day just to ride around a bit to familiarize myself with the area a little bit.

I'd go with the first dates... 6th to 23rd. You'll be there before anyone else. You'll be there when bulls are gathering harems. You'll be there during the peak of the rut. You'll be there before any rifle deer hunters. You won't miss a thing whereas if you don't start until the 13th you could miss out on some action.

Not sure what unit you're hunting but some have rifle elk openers around the 25th too.

You'll love western Wyoming. Good luck.

Joe has good points about hunting early, but for my money I'd go on the later dates 13-30th. What's your hunting style? If you're planning on tree stand hunting over water, then earlier would be better. I think if you're running and gunning though, the later dates would work better.

It'd be running and gunning.

It's up to you, but IMO I'd go with the later dates. Our most successful dates are centered around the 20th. Last year I took mine on the 19th, my buddy on the 23rd and my son missed one on the 23rd as well. We were into elk earlier and later in the month, just couldn't close the deal.
