elk camp 2012 (updated 9-9-12)

Postby JimKirk » 09 04, 2012 •  [Post 1]

started hunting saturday. loaded up the fourwheeler and headed into some of my hunting areas. lots of nitetime bugling all around my tent. called a bull in from my sleeping bag but they must be calling to the moon because around daylight the clam up. alot of active wallow use too. passed on a 15 yard cow shot from a tree stand. got tired of sitting and moved to a new area the next day and you guessed it, a 6x 33 yards from my tree stand the following evening as recorded on the trail camera. oh well, thats hunting. heading out again thursday. some great quality public land animals still being recorded albeit more nighttime activity. i'll just show you the pictures, thats more fun anyway.

Great pics! Love to see those elk in the wallow. I'm surprised they are so close to the cattle, as I've never seen elk actually hanging around with those stinkers. Good stuff!

Awesome pics! Funny about the cows I have seen elk and cattle mixed a lot. This summer I watched 2 elk and 2 cows use the same puddle at the same time. Keep the pics a coming!

the chase continued. got busted twice this weekend sitting at some promising sights because of wind shifts . had a calf bust me and take the herd with him which I believe included the bull in the wallow in this series. and so the story goes, was taking a break with my weekend hunting partner and I let out a few cow calls and then 10 minutes later I look up and a bull is standing there at 67 yards looking at me. dang now haven't we all been preached that lesson before. got alot more bugle action this over the last few days with answers and even approaches. but when i close the gap, they seem to eventually quieten up and head the other way. I passed another cow shot in hopes for one of these busters. I have one more weekend to give it a shot. we shall see. now these are some trophy public land bulls. these are herd bulls! love the non typical here, he's a bruiser.
