Big Bull Coming

Postby Swede » 03 14, 2016 •  [Post 1]

It is 5:00PM September 3rd, and a big bull is coming your way. You are between the bull and a water hole just 20 yards downhill. The wind is fairly steady, but an occasional gust still makes you nervous. It sure looks like you will get a shot if he continues down the trail he is on. There is moderate vegetation all around, and the bull will likely be in and out of sight for a minute or two. Would you rather be hiding on the ground now on in a concealed tree stand?

Tree stand, if he's headed my way already towards a known water source being in a tree has too many advantages.

With iffy wind & given a choice, I'll take the treestand for sure!

There have been a few times, like last September, when I have been very tempted to get out on my stand. There was a herd bull in a wallow about 89 yards away. Instead I shot the cow that came to me. There have been many times when elk did not come in like I expected and just went away. Still, I can only remember getting out of my stand once to try to slip in on an elk. It was many years ago and did not work. Since then I have just rode it out. At least by staying in my stand I have not spooked the elk.

Tree stand sounds like the best bet to me, but I don't have one so my only option is the ground. Been busted by a wisp of wind more times than I can count. A couple from last year are still fresh in my mind!
